About Butlers Arms

Great local pub, good proper cooking, cracking beers and some pretty decent, well priced wines. Worth a visit we think.

Butlers Arms Description

Ten things about us. . . . . . . . . . . . .

We are a small, family run business established a few years ago.

We offer good quality, freshly prepared, home cooked food in an industry which is now dominated by ‘chain’ offers.

We do not have any ‘bought in’ dishes on our menu. We cook and prepare own all hams, pates and terrines on the premises. Our desserts have never seen the inside of a frozen food van. Nothing on the menu is a ‘boil in the bag’ ready meal. The downside of this is that our wages bill is considerably higher than the average pub chain. (I know this because we used to work for one). It also means that things can sometimes take a little longer than we’d like – Sorry ‘bout that.

We think, (we’re not sure) that we’re the only pub business in the local area that actually makes their own chips. They start the morning as potatoes and are hand cut every day – Maris Piper for preference.

We do not (unlike a lot of our competitors) have strict brewery budgets and profit targets that have to be met. If we want to spend a little more on our food or accept a lesser margin we can. If we want to change our menu we can (and often do).

We take pride in our cask ales and we are listed in the 2015 Good Beer Guide. We like to keep a good amount of variety on the hand pulls – we have a few favourites which re-appear on a regular basis, such as Deuchar’s IPA and Greene King Abbot Ale but many of our beers appear much less often. Each week we buy (on average) eight different casks which means that generally at least one of the four ales on offer will change almost every day.

We are however a ‘tied’ business meaning that we are obliged to buy our beer from our landlord. The downside of this is that we pay more for our beer than a ‘free house’ would (boo). We are also limited in choice to the products in their portfolio, although, to be fair, it’s not too shabby.

We source our produce where possible from local suppliers, some of whom we have been working with for years.

We smoke our own fish – all the smoked salmon, mackerel, and trout on the menu are cured and smoked here on the premises.

We keep a pretty fair wine list and we’re always on the lookout for bargains; small parcels of a few cases of something interesting at a good price. We always pass our savings on – which means that you can often get a bargain. The downside of course is ‘when it’s gone it’s gone’.

The Butlers Bank Holiday Party (It's also Becki's Birthday.... She's getting really old now! ;-)) Sunday 26th August 2018 DJ from 8.00pm till Midnight Free Entry... Free Buffet (woohoo!)
It's the LAST Bank Holiday of the year!
Matt James will be coming down to DJ for our party, we’ll be putting on a bit of a buffet and playing some party classics.
Music starts about 8.00pm – no tickets but if you want a table it is recommended that you arrive early as we get stoopidly busy. Please note the restaurant will be closing at 5.00pm.
Fortuitously it also coincides with Becki’s birthday (she's chuffing old now) so I can claim that it’s a party just for her and then I won’t have to buy her any prezzies (Shhhhhh!) ;-) also... I think she prefers flowers to chocolates incase anyone was wondering!
There's no work on Monday so we hope to see you all here!

Stumbled across this lovely place whilst searching for somewhere to have Sunday lunch. Food was really good and the home made gins are great. I recommend the sticky banana pudding absolutely delicious. We had the 3 course lunch and were very impressed. Loved the interior design too. Hope to visit again sometime.

People thinking they have a right to park anywhere and getting uppity when asked to buy a drink or not park in the pubs car park, get real, its a small car park for the pubs customers, not the bowling club. Which bit is unfair?

User

Lovely food and service and oh that Boozy Ginger Pudding!

User

I’m quite often away with work most of the year, but when ever I’m back I make sure I visit at least once! Great service and very friendly staff!

User

I particularly enjoyed the car park . Space to park which as a paying customer is important . Used to be full of cars from the bowling Club who didn’t even buy a drink !

User

I have just left the pub after and as I don't own a car I didn't get to use the car park. Maybe I could sell my paying customer allocation to some entitled fool. I will happily drink on their money so they can have the parking space

User

I booked online as me and my wife were only in the area for a day as we live an hour away. The food was excellent, the dessert was too and we were astonished at the price, we have paid double elsewhere for less. Keep up the good work , would recommend to anyone

User

Had a lovely meal today for Mother’s Day with both sets of parents, thoroughly enjoyed by all, Staff were really nice, good service.

User

Had a 3 course Sunday lunch here yesterday, it was divine! Good quality food, fantastic presentation and excellent service. Highly recommend this place.

User

Great service and even better food. I chose the salmon teriyaki and I actually asked if their was a genuine Thai chef in the kitchen as the subtlety of the flavours was perfect.

We have been a number of times, eaten the lamb, burgers and steaks but this time chose Crab on toast (superb) my partner the black pudding and poached egg (again superb) and he had the fish and chips. All the dishes were very well presented and impeccably prepared. I was extremely impressed with my salmon dish - it was divine.

User

Great food, great service, great ambiance, great 👍🏻

User

User

Excellent food, lovely service & a quirky relaxed atmosphere. Hope to visit again when next in the area.

User

Enjoyed Easter Sunday lunch here with the family. Good food, spot on service and good value with everyone well fed and watered. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

User

Brilliant atmosphere, great staff and fantastic food ! We'll be back !!

User

Best 1664 ever and great food top service and Becki is top notch, the best

User

Great location, greeted and served at the bar pretty quick, waited in the bar zone for a short while and called through to our table. The pre service area we waited in needed some attention, plates and glasses not cleared. Main table service was good and the food was great value for your money. One of the desserts (Creme Brule) was burnt badly, was the only thing that let the food down. Overall the staff were pleasant and the food great value.. Worth a visit.. Amazing

User

Staff are good and most the food is good but I had the beef and it was very fatty and chewy ☹️

User

Food was tasty. Not many options for veggies or vegans. Sticky ginger pudding was delicious. Staff a bit too attentive. Had to politely ask them to leave us to chat in between courses. Manager sarcastic (which I usually find witty but not when I don't know someone).
