About Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (Chect)

A UK charity dedicated to helping people affected by retinoblastoma. We provide support, raise awareness and fund research.

Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (Chect) Description

The Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT) is a UK charity dedicated to helping people affected by retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer. We:

• Provide support and information to families and individuals.
• Fund research into the prevention and treatment of retinoblastoma.
• Raise awareness among health professionals and the public.
• Influence policy to improve services for patients.

We know that when a child is diagnosed, it can be a distressing and frightening time for everyone, and we are here to help. We also understand that for some people retinoblastoma can have a long term impact and we offer lifelong support for anyone affected – from diagnosis to adulthood.

We’ve been helping families for nearly 30 years but we don’t receive any money from the government and we rely on public support to fund our vital work.

When you're looking through all the lovely photos you took of your children or grandchildren over Christmas, you might see a white glow in their eye.
Most of the time this is completely harmless, but very occasionally it might be a symptom of something more serious. Find out what causes white eye and what to do if you spot it here: https://chect.org.uk/about-retinoblastoma -2/whiteeye/

So here are just a few of our many highlights of the year, that have all been made possible because of you. Merry Christmas everyone.

The Highlands Charity Challenge Team 2018 cycled from Aberdeen to the Cairngorm mountain range, hiked across it and then cycled on to Inverness – all the while raising money for CHECT. Thank you to this awesome group of 12 and their trusty support Brain for donating an amazing £2,584.43!

What a great piece on BBC Radio Sheffield about Olivia, 9, who won a CHECT Champion Award for the courage she has shown since being diagnosed with retinoblastoma. Thanks to Olivia and her mum Jane for helping us to raise awareness of retinoblastoma.
Our Chief Executive Patrick Tonks was also interviewed. You can listen to the piece (it starts at 9 mins in, and again at 1hr 8 mins):

We'd like to say a huge thank you to @visionexpress for their incredible support over the last eight years.

Our Son had this in 1976 when he was two and a half. He had his eye removed at Leicester Royal Infirmary. When we went for a check up, another tumour was found in his remaining eye

We were quickly sent to St Barts in London where he was given Laser treatment, and thank goodness this cured him. We are so grateful that the Hospital saved his life.

He is now 44 years of age, has a good job, drives and is married with two Children. There is life after Retina Blastoma
