Today's tooth haul! These teeth were removed from a pony today as they were rather loose and would have been causing difficulty eating and discomfort. To the left are four cheek teeth and on the right is one incisor. Due to the pony's age the roots are much shorter than in a younger horse, where the cheek teeth roots could be twice as long.
This extraction was performed at home with the pony sedated and also nerve blocks were performed (similar to if you were having a tooth ...out at the dentist). This made the procedure much easier and more comfortable for the pony.
For extractions (even wolf teeth) local anaesthetic, pain relief and sedation should be given, and therefore an EDT ('dentist') shouldn't perform these procedures without. We are happy to work alongside any members of the BAEDT in this area to perform extractions or further treatments/surgeries when required. We can also perform routine dental work with sedation on our zone days, to allow full thorough examination and treatment/rasping (by hand or using motorised equipment) in a relaxed environment for your horse.
You can check the BAEDT register for qualified and registered dental technicians here: http://www.baedt.com/?c=5432

Happy birthday Sarah for Friday! We meant to put this up earlier but we only briefly caught five minutes together to light the candles during a hectic Friday at the clinic! 🎉🎂

An interesting case today!
This horse presented initially with conjunctivitis and some ocular discharge. However, on her third eyelid there were several white patches which were quite unusual. She was started on antibiotic eye drops as they appeared to be infected, and a second opinion was sought from an ophthalmology (eye) specialist. They recommended taking a biopsy from the eyelid, which was sent away to the laboratory for examination.
Unfortunately, these white spots wer...e due to a kind of tumour called a 'Squamous Cell Carcinoma' (SCC). These kind of tumours can start on the third eyelid but if left may progress to cause physical damage to the eye (due to rubbing) or spread to the surface of the eye itself or the other eyelids.
Today Vicky and Sarah went out to surgically remove the third eyelid. Horses cope remarkably well with this surgery, and it can be performed with the horse standing with the use of sedation and local anaesthetic to numb the eyelids. As you can see in the fourth photo the third eyelid is actually very large! There is a piece of cartilage within it that needs to be fully removed else it can leave a sharp edge which would cause rubbing. In this case the whole eyelid was removed and no other tumours could be seen elsewhere so we are hopeful this horse will make a full recovery, but we will continue to 'keep an eye on her'.
Thank you to her owner for allowing us to perform this surgery and share their story and photos 🐴

Amazing and informative day participating in Sue Dyson’s study on behavioural scoring in ridden horses and it’s correlation with pain and lameness. We’re looking forward to hearing the results when they’re published!

What is a ‘bit-seat’? Should all horses have ‘wolf teeth’ removed? What is a ‘wedging procedure’? Don’t know your ‘ramps’ from your ‘hooks’? Read on…

As of October 2018 we will be losing the tapeworm treatment equitape as the product is discontinued.
Unfortunately this was our only treatment containing praziquantel on it’s own. All other products available are combined Wormers containing this ingredient and a roundworm treatment such as moxidectin or ivermectin.
It will be even more important that we try to minimise our use of these products by using the equisal tapeworm test and faecal worm egg counts. The link below s...hows a helpful table produced by west gate laboratories on worming treatments when you have your tapeworm and faecal worm egg count results. It also highlights the current resistance to some of these Wormers.
We provide worm egg count packs at the practice and will soon be offering reminders to all our clients who use them about when they are due - watch this space for our worm egg count and tapeworm test reminder system!

Ive been with Clarendon for the past 2years and they have been absolutely fantastic in dealing with my mares kissing spines and arthritis, including sorting the insurance claim for me. Cannot fault them and they are always friendly, helpful and also call if they are running late. Excellent service!

I've been with Clarendon for 3 years and unfortunately am relocating so will be registering with a new vets nearer to our new home - but you have all been fantastic when I have needed you over the past 3 years, so wanted to say thank you! I usually see Vicky who's been fab and taken time to explain things to me (thankfully only needed for one emergency when my mare tied up!), but this morning Sarah came out to do my boys vaccinations and she was so lovely and took her time with him and also gave me some advice about transporting him for our move. I never feel like the appointments are rushed even though they must have a million and one things to do! And the ladies on reception are so lovely and helpful, so thank you everyone at Clarendon, you come highly recommended

Great service today as always,! We usually have Vicky who is great! & we've recently had the pleasure of meeting Sarah, on a previous yard visit to us and again today at the practice. I would just like to say how great Sarah is too ! Very friendly, takes her time to explain everything and was so good with my boy and his needle phobia lol, Thank you very much Sarah & Vicky! xx

Boy had his melanomas lasered on a really sensitive area around his anus... I had read horror stories about this treatment on line and was beyond nervous.... we have been signed off today... 9 days after surgery... I cannot thank Sarah, lauren, jo and suzie enough first for their AMAZING work but also for the support/ aftercare/ patience and professionalism... I certainly wouldn't have been brave to decide to do it in the first place without Sarah's advice and support but the whole team have made me realise that this was without any doubt the right decision. My boy is already happier and the team are real horse women from whom I have learnt so much. Thank you all. This doesn't seem enough
