ŌĆ£With a lead-coloured sky through which lightening was flashing overhead, the Mayoress of Burnley(Mrs Elijah Keighley) yesterday afternoon opened the new Ightenhill Park in the west end of BurnleyŌĆØ. This was how the ŌĆ£Burnley ExpressŌĆØ described the opening of what was BurnleyŌĆÖs fourth park showing. [Credit Roger Frost and Friends Of Ightenhill Park]
Ightenhill Park itself is over 100 years old, dating back to when the then Lord Shuttleworth gave up land from the Gawthorpe Esta...te, previously used for grazing, to create an ŌĆśopen air spaceŌĆÖ. The realisation of the park was the work of GH Pickles, Burnley Borough Engineer and Surveyor, and the parks Superintendent, Robert Murray. When it opened, the park contained paths, shrubberies, lawns and flower beds. There were also several buildings of which the most important was the bandstand. The opening of the park itself took place outside the gates by the Mayoress, presented with a gold-key with which to unlock the gates. Today, Burnley Council and Friends of Ightenhill Park are working together to improve facilities, which have already achieved Green Flag status including improvements to recreation courts etc in the park.
