Moving day is often very stressful as it is, but children can add to that and also become very stressed out by the move too. So here are our tips for moving with children.
-Let your children know as soon as possible about the move, it’s been said that the sooner children know about moving home the better they will handle it so make sure the little ones know.
-Be super positive about the move so that your children aren’t dreading or becoming anxious of the idea of moving home,... especially if it’s their first time. A good way around this is to get them involved as much as you can with the move letting them pack their own things and decide how they will arrange their new bedroom.
-If you aren’t able to have a family friend or relative look after your children while you move, let them know exactly what is happening with the move and how it will all go down. On top of this if they are with you for the move give them roles that they can perform to help with the move e.g. toy collector and mover, this will keep them occupied while you handle more important jobs for the move.
-If you are moving further away from your local area so needing to change schools for your children they may be concerned about what there is for them in their new area, so before leaving have a small leaving party where they can see all of their friends before the move and say all the goodbyes that they want to. Then at some point before or after the move have a day out with your children showing them all of the fun things they can do nearby so that they aren’t feeling as if they have been taken away from everything they enjoy.
-When it comes to settling in whether you are in the new home or a temporary one, make it feel as homely and welcoming as possible so have a small box of toys for your children to play with and put up family photos around the place. Another great thing to do is keep your routines the same, so with dinner and bed time keep these similar to your current times so your kids don’t feel too uncomfortable or out of place in their new surroundings.
