We are looking forward to receiving work from Stephen Murfitt this Tuesday for our September display feature.
Hand-built forms are raku fired. Influences are diverse and come from a fusion of visual elements seen in the natural and built environments. The effects of weathering and decay provide a constant source of reference.

Featured Maker | September to December | Georgie Gardiner
"The wheel was thrilling - I still find that even today - I am amazed that from a lump of clay comes form - beauty - full bellies - elegant necks - small feet."

Opening in September at the Castlefield Gallery, Manchester.
SUBI мИШлєД 14 September 2018 вАФ 4 November 2018 Curated by Castlefield Gallery (UK) & Barim (Korea)
... The Korean word SUBI мИШлєД has a particular meaning in the context of ceramics, relating to the refining of clay; whether purifying the raw material or the processes needed to rehydrate and filter dried clay so that it can be reused.
Artists: Sam Buckley (UK), Insook Choi (Korea / UK), Joe Hartley (UK), Eunji Briller Kim (Korea), Eunmi Kim (Korea / UK), John Powell-Jones (UK), Hyun Min Shin (Korea),Gae-Hwa Lim (Korea), Gyung-Kyun Shin (Korea)
At Castlefield Gallery, SUBI мИШлєД brings together a diverse group of experimental artists, product designers and master makers. All are highly skilled as a result of either formal training, self-teaching, or passing down from one generation to another. They place great value on the transfer of skills, knowledge and ideology through objects and making, and see this form of exchange from one generation to another, and from one culture to another, as integral to creating and communicating the world in which we live. The exhibition will feature traditional ceramics alongside works which explore the materiality of clay with ceramic costumes, film, and sound. Visitors to the gallery will also be invited to add their own handmade clay objects to the exhibition.

Opening next week | Bev Bell-Hughes | Tidal Echo Thursday 23rd August to Saturday 15th September 2018
Using a combination of flattened coils, press moulds and pinching, Bev warps the clay with her fingers until she senses the shape is right, working her way around the form to ensure the freshness of the marks is retained. The work is an emotive response to the process of nature, rippling and fluttering as an echo of the water and sand on her beloved Morfa beach.

Opening next week | Bev Bell-Hughes | Tidal Echo Thursday 23rd Aug - Sat 15th Sept
For Bev, who has been visually impaired from birth, touch is vital to both the conception and making of the work. This way of experiencing the world is translated in the objects, which demand to be felt and experienced, an 'echo of the process of nature'.

Royal College of Art graduate Philipp Schenk-Mischke aims to bring an element of chaos to his designs, which include lopsided vases and tables held together by metal blobs.

Featured Maker | July to October | Philomena Pretsell
Philomena studied at Edinburgh College of Art. Students were encouraged to find their voice, explore and develop new ways of working and thinking. It is a way of searching that continues to drive her and the learning curve of working with clay is forever steep...

Featured Maker | July to October | Nicola Werner
When starting out, Nicola found herself drawn to tin glaze. She approached established potters with the hope to find work as an apprentice. With luck, there was a space for her on the team at Aldermaston (Alan Caiger-Smith). She worked there for 3 years learning everything she could.
She gained a firm grounding in majolica and a devotion to a life in ceramics...
