About Cyana

CYANA is Newham's Cancer Support Group, in operation since 1983. We provide counselling, support, advice and advocacy for anyone affected by cancer.

Cyana Description

We provide free one-to-one counselling, face to face or telephone, for any cancer patient, carer or family member of a patient if they live in the London Borough of Newham or are registered with a Newham GP. Advice and advocacy on various issues likely to affect cancer patients are also free to Newham residents. Non-Newham residents are asked to make a donation for counselling sessions. Anyone is welcome to our three regular support groups, and we offer cheap Complementary Therapies to anyone, though cancer patients and their carers have priority for these sessions. We also run regular social activities both from our office and other locations, and we hope we offer a safe, friendly and relaxing atmosphere to help you through your journey. All staff and volunteers have been either cancer patients or carers - we have been there, and have experienced what you are going through; and if we can help in any way then we will. Please contact us on 0208 553 5366 for more details on our services or to book an appointment to come up and see us: or just drop in to our main open door session on a Wednesday afternoon between 12 and 4.

We had a great time selling bits and doing nail art for donations at Manor Park Library's fun day yesterday. Thanks to Andrew and the team for inviting us again :)

We had blazing hot weather and a good crowd for our Fundraising BBQ yesterday! Nearly £500 was raised at the BBQ and from a very generous £100 donation from Mr Patel of London's in Church Road, who has carried one of our collection boxes for many years. Special thank yous to staff & members who donated the food and drinks, and especially to Nigel from the Association for Prostate Awareness for donating loads of food AND cooking it for us!

Very, VERY important. We welcome LGBTQ+ patients and carers into our little family, but sometimes have to address misconceptions from others.

In 2016, Marie Curie published an excellent report on the difficulties faces by LGBTQ+ people in end of life care. Click to download and read the PDF version of that report.

So important during Pride month, and at any other time thereafter: “Trans people, or those who don’t identify as being a woman, need to know that cervical screening is for them, especially as there are a lot of myths about who needs to be screened and not.”

And yes, it's available FREEE for patients in the UK!

Sikhs face particular difficulties when going through Chemo ...

Live rollout for our area is 25th July 2018 :( We are going to get a lot busier as UC disproportionately affects sick and disabled claimants.

WATCH THIS SPACE... we will be having a USA themed fundraising BBQ on Wednesday 4th July! "Dump Trump" t-shirts welcome ;)

We'll be sharing some articles about LGBT+ people's experiences with cancer diagnosis and care through Pride month. Some of out LGBT+ clients have faced lack of understanding and outright discrimination at the hands of the NHS and the care system, it's time for that to stop.

User

This Pride month, it's important to realise that LGBT+ people are disproportionately affected by cancer, both in terms of getting diagnosed, and in discrimination while they are undergoing treatment. We'd just like to remind you all that CYANA is a totally inclusive organisation, and whatever your orientation or gender identification, you are all welcome here - your ACE/ARO manager, Tina :).

The only charity of its kind in the area - excellent support and sympathy, makes all the difference.
