🌼 Bronchiolitis - Sickness Sunday 🌼
Bronchiolitis is a common lower respiratory tract infection that affects babies and young children under 2 years old.
It is most widespread from November to March and it's possible to get bronchiolitis more than once during the same season.
... It is caused by a virus known as the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which is spread through tiny droplets of liquid from the coughs or sneezes of someone who's infected.
The infection causes the smallest airways in the lungs (the bronchioles) to become infected and inflamed.
The inflammation reduces the amount of air entering the lungs, making it difficult to breathe.
By the age of 2, almost all infants will have been infected with RSV and up to half will have had bronchiolitis.
Most cases are mild and clear up within 2 to 3 weeks without the need for treatment, although some children have severe symptoms and need hospital treatment.
The early symptoms of bronchiolitis are similar to those of a common cold, such as a runny nose and a cough.
Further symptoms then usually develop over the next few days, including:
🌼 A slight high temperature. 🌼 A dry and persistent cough. 🌼 Difficulty feeding. 🌼 Rapid or noisy breathing (wheezing).
TREATING BRONCHIOLITIS
There's no medication to kill the virus that causes bronchiolitis, but the infection usually clears up within 2 weeks without the need for treatment.
Most children can be cared for at home in the same way that you'd treat a cold.
🌼 Make sure your child gets enough fluid to avoid dehydration. 🌼 You can give infants paracetamol or ibuprofen to bring down their temperature if the fever is upsetting them following the guidance on the packaging.
WHEN TO GET MEDICAL HELP
Most cases of bronchiolitis are not serious, but see your GP or call NHS 111 if:
🌼 You are worried about your child. 🌼 Your child has taken less than half their usual amount during the last 2 or 3 feeds, or they have had a dry nappy for 12 hours or more. 🌼 Your child has a persistent high temperature of 38C or above. 🌼 Your child seems very tired or irritable.
A diagnosis of bronchiolitis is based on your child's symptoms and an examination of their breathing.
Dial 999 for an ambulance if:
🌼 Your baby is having difficulty breathing. 🌼 Your baby's tongue or lips are blue. 🌼 There are long pauses in your baby's breathing.

The theme of this year’s Children’s Mental Health Week is ‘Find your Brave’.
Life often throws challenges our way. Bravery isn’t about coping alone or holding things in. It’s about finding positive ways to deal with things that might be difficult, overcoming physical and mental challenges and looking after yourself.
As parents and carers, you play an important role in your child’s mental health. @_place2be

I always talk about the risks of batteries in my classes, particularly button batteries so please watch this video!
Repost @daisyfirstaid (@get_repost) ・・・ 🌼Button Batteries can kill🌼
... This video is of a finger light my 5 year old son received in a party bag. This is REALLY IMPORTANT. Button batteries. They’re used in so many things. From thermometers, car remotes, watches, key fobs, calculators, small toys, mini torches – and even those musical birthday cards. But they can be INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS. Really really dangerous to kids. Kids end up in hospital every week because of button batteries. This need to be stopped.
If they are swallowed they can get stuck and burn through the oesophagus. And that can all happen in less than 2 hours. It could mean very serious injury. And very sadly, they have already resulted in the death of children. The worst thing is, it could be swallowed, get stuck and you don’t even know it’s there – because it may not block the airway. We can help change this. Know what items in your home have these batteries. Keep those items away from kids. Make sure the battery compartment is safely secured. Store any spare batteries out of reach. Check toys to see if they have these batteries and ensure they can’t be accessed. Dispose of the used batteries immediately and safely.
And act quickly. If you think someone has swallowed a battery – don’t wait for symptoms. Call 999 immediately or get them to A&E immediately. . . . . #buttonbatteries #buttonbatteryawareness #buttonbattery #firstaid #daisyfirstaid #partybagfillers #partybags #childrensparty #childrenspartyideas #childsafety #mumsoftoddlers #dadsoftoddlers #toddlersofinstagram #kids #parenting #parentsofinstagram #parentinghacks #babysafety #mummybloggeruk #mumblog #daddyblogger #mumlife #familysafety #familyfirst

🌼 Colds - Sickness Sunday 🌼
This time of year colds are everywhere!!
It is normal for a child to have 8 or more colds a year, which is because there are hundreds of different cold viruses around and young children have no immunity to any of them as they have never had them before.
... They do gradually build up immunity and get fewer colds though.
Most people get better in 5 to 7 days, but it can take up to 2 weeks with small children.
Some suggestions from the NHS to help ease symptoms are:
🌼 Drink plenty of fluids. 🌼 Saline nose drops to relieve stuffy noses. 🌼 Children's paracetamol or ibruprofen may be given following the packaging guidance, if your child has a temperature, in discomfort or pain. 🌼 Encourage everyone to wash their hands regularly to stop the cold spreading.
Children under 6 should not have over-the-counter cough and cold remedies, including decongestants, unless advised to by a GP or pharmacist.
🌼Sore Throats 🌼 Sore throats are often caused by a cold or viral infection, which often appear a couple of days before the cold breaks.
🌼 Most sore throats get better on their own after a few days. 🌼 If your child has a sore throat for more than 4 days, has a temperature and generally unwell see your GP.
If they're unable to swallow fluids or saliva or have any difficulty breathing, go to A&E or call 999 immediately as they'll need urgent treatment in hospital.
🌼 Coughs 🌼 Children often cough when they have a cold because of mucus trickling down the back of the throat.
If your child is feeding, drinking, eating and breathing normally and there's no wheezing, a cough is not usually anything to worry about.
Although it's upsetting to hear your child cough, coughing helps clear away phlegm from the chest or mucus from the back of the throat.
If your child is over the age of 1, they can try drinking a warm drink of lemon and honey: 🌼 Squeeze half a lemon into a mug of boiled water add 1 to 2 teaspoons of honey. 🌼 Drink while still warm (do not give hot drinks to small children)
🌼 If your child has had a cough that's lasted longer than 3 weeks, see your GP.
🌼 If your child's temperature is very high, or they feel hot and shivery, they may have a chest infection. You should take them to a GP or you can call 111.
🌼 If your child is finding it hard to breathe, go to A&E or call 999 immediately as they'll need urgent treatment in hospital.
