'The Wimpole Street dental clinic is the chicest we've come across. Each room is a new surprise, with statement furniture (like the giant lip sofa in Susan Tanner's consulting room), frescoed ceilings (a welcome distraction from full mouth reconstruction) and some enormous ficus trees in the waiting room. Everything you need to know to keep your smile looking great! One of our dental hygienists, Jenny shares her advice.
"Which toothpaste should I use?" - We recommend any sensitive toothpaste.
... "Should I rinse my mouth after brushing?" - No - it's most beneficial for the fluoride from your toothpaste to remain on your teeth to work properly.
"Should I use mouthwash?" - We don't recommend using a mouthwash unless you have been prescribed one. Apart from washing away the beneficial fluoride left from your toothpaste after you've brushed your teeth, mouthwash kills both the harmful and the beneficial bacteria in your mouth.
"How often should I floss?" - Floss once a day, in a C shape to get the most effective results. But, since we're on the topic, only use floss if your teeth are particularly tightly packed. Otherwise, we recommend using a dental bottle brush, an interdental brush or a rubber toothpick.

A dental research study has found that the high concentration of hydrogen peroxide in over- the-counter teeth whitening strips can cause lasting damage to your teeth. It is important to protect the health of your teeth with professional and individualised care.
There has been an alarming trend in high street beauty salons and spas teeth offering whitening treatments, which appears to be an extensio...n of the other non-surgical beauty treatments they offer. However, teeth whitening by anyone other than a General Dental Council (GDC) registered professional is illegal, and only a dentist is qualified to advise and perform tooth whitening treatments.
For some, whitening is a great method for brightening already healthy teeth or to remove signs of staining from lifestyle habits. Before undertaking any whitening treatment, it is important to go back to basics, and identify the causes of the discolouration of the teeth and manage it appropriately. Not only will this prevent it worsening but also regressing so quickly after whitening - things like red wine, tea, coffee, smoking and other such habits that can stain the teeth, should be stopped (in the case of smoking) or reduced to maintain the benefit of the treatment.
There are instances where whitening may not actually be appropriate, for example in patients with a lot of tooth wear, where all of the enamel may have been worn down, exposing the dentine and increasing the sensitivity of the teeth.
