It is wonderful news that we have been ranked as one of #eprivateclient’s Top Family Law Firms for 2019!
This followed an extensive survey carried out by eprivateclient in order to identify, recognise, introduce and promote the Top Family Law Firms in the UK.
The results of this survey were published in June but we have waited to announce it until we received the actual award so we could show you a photo of it as the same time!

We’re really excited to have been shortlisted as Company of the Year - Female Leadership (Boutique) in the @Citywealth Powerwomen Awards 2020!
This award celebrates successful companies with outstanding female leaders, with vision, drive and the commitment and skills to make change happen.
Our female leaders include Anne-Marie Hutchinson OBE, QC (Hon), with “near legendary status” in her field, Kate Allen described as “in a league of her own” , the “fearless, enormously e...xperienced” Carolina Marin Pedreno, a former International Family Lawyer of the Year and “model of excellence” Zoe Fleetwood, Resolution National Committee member and a former Times Lawyer of the Week, as well as partners Charlotte Conner, Lisette Dupre, Jessica Reid and consultant Rhiannon Lewis all ranked in Citywealth, Chambers and/or the Legal 500.
We have been shortlisted amongst other highly esteemed firms, so we feel very privileged to be included.
We are especially proud that this means that the firm has been shortlisted, this year, for TWO Citywealth awards; the other being Best Employer – Career Progression LGBT+/inclusion.
Details of how to vote for us will follow!!

We were taken by surprise, but are absolutely thrilled to have been shortlisted as Best Employer – Career Progression LGBT+/inclusion in the Citywealth Future Leaders Awards 2019.
We have long been committed to diversity and inclusion in the firm. We have evolved from a firm comprising 3 white, male, public school educated partners (all called John) in the 1980’s to a modern firm comprising 67% women partners and 74% women non-partner lawyers.
We hold a Silver Law Societ...y Diversity & Inclusion Charter Mark and a Diversity Aware Charter Mark. We have championed legal issues in the LGBT+ community for many years and been awarded several LGBT+ awards.
This award, if we were to win it, would really mean something special for us. We are up against some pretty impressive – and much, much larger - firms than us, so we would really appreciate it if you vote for our David against the Goliaths! https://www.leaderslist.co.uk/leaderslist /dawson-cornwell

Zoe Fleetwood was selected as one of 70 prominent lawyers, ex-lawyers and champions of legal aid, including Lady Hale and the Secret Barrister, to contribute case summaries of notable legal aid cases that changed law.
Justice Alliance has produced the pamphlet, ‘Legal Aid Matters’ to celebrate the 70th birthday of legal aid on 30th July 2019, as well as to show the evolution of legal aid and highlight how legal aid has contributed to the development of the law over the past 7...0 years.
The case that Zoe chose to write about was Gillick v West Norfolk and Wisbech AHA [1985] UKHL 7, which paved the way for children's voices to be heard. https://lnkd.in/d-bvxiN

Last night we hosted the presentation of the 8th annual Peter Clark Prize, funded by Dawson Cornwell, his family and friends.
Congratulations to this year’s winners, Bethan Ratcliffe and Michael Terry!
This two-prize award is open to University of Law London students who score the highest marks in the family assessment. Both winners receive £1,000 in prize money.
... This highly valued prize was established in honour of Peter Clark, a partner at Dawson Cornwell until his death in 2010. His intelligence, attention to detail and drafting skills combined with the constructive and conciliatory approach he adopted served as an example to all as to how family law should be practiced.

We are delighted to have been ranked, again, by Chambers High Net Worth 2019 as a Leading Firm. It is particularly pleasing that they report we are “held in high regard by leaders in the field” and are recognised for our

We’ve been granted permission to appeal to the UK Supreme Court against a decision of the Court of Appeal. Anne-Marie Hutchinson OBE, QC (Hon) and James Netto represent the appellant, instructing Mark Twomey QC & Alex Laing of Coram Chambers and Rob George of Harcourt Chambers. The case concerns the use of the inherent jurisdiction in child abduction cases and the UK Supreme Court will now determine whether a child can be “re-located” or “returned” under the inherent jurisdiction where Children Act provisions may be applicable. The case is due to be heard next Thursday 18th July 2019, updates to follow. https://lnkd.in/dfMSYfC

Thanks #ICFLPP for such a great conference last week. Anne-Marie Hutchinson OBE, QC (Hon), Russell Bywater, Colin Rogerson, Sulema Jahangir and James Netto were honoured to present and found all of the sessions so informative, as did Shabina Begum as a rapporteur.

The front cover of the Law Society Gazette shows Dawson Cornwell partner Carolina Marín Pedreño, along with Presidents and Secretaries of Local Law Societies from around the country, protesting against legal aid cuts.
They stand in solidarity with the Criminal Bar who are due to implement a whole profession walk out on Monday 1st July 2019, in protest against the underfunding of the criminal justice system which is said to be "without exaggeration, on the brink of collapse"....

Sulema Jahangir's vital work assisting abandoned women & mothers is highlighted in The Sunday Times. The article reveals the agony of mothers who are forcibly separated from their children and what changes must be made to prevent this.
The feature states: “Not all cases are so hopeless, and some women make it back. In order to do this, they need a lawyer. Sulema Jahangir, a British-Pakistani lawyer and human rights activist at the London firm Dawson Cornwell, has been helping victims for years, often through legal aid or simply pro bono. She says the main barrier to women getting back into the UK, as well as not knowing their own rights, is the Home Office.”

Today we welcome Sifiso Mtyityaba, recipient of the inaugural IAFL / University of Western Cape South African Travel Studentship. He will divide his time over the next week between Dawson Cornwell with Carolina Marín Pedreño and Jacqueline Renton of 4PB.
Sifiso is an LLM student studying International Family Law at the University of the Western Cape and was selected for the studentship based on an essay on proposed amendments to the Children's Act concerning parental responsi...bilities and rights. He notes that his interest in family law is founded on his affinity for children who shape the future of a family and the community in which they are a part!
Thanks to IAFL and Joy Feinberg for organising.
