Coming to the Lakeside Theatre on Tuesday 15th January at 7 pm...
Simon Russell Beale plays William Shakespeare’s Richard II, broadcast live from the stage of the Almeida Theatre in London to cinemas.
This visceral new production about the limits of power will be directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins, whose previous plays include Little Revolution at the Almeida and Absolute Hell at the National Theatre.
... Richard II, King of England, is irresponsible, foolish and vain. His weak leadership sends his kingdom into disarray and his court into uproar. Seeing no other option but to seize power, the ambitious Bolingbroke challenges the throne and the king’s divine right to rule.
Simon Russell Beale returns to National Theatre Live screens following broadcasts of Timon of Athens and King Lear, and his recent role in the National Theatre’s critically acclaimed production of The Lehman Trilogy.
We're very excited, hope to see lots of you there!

OPPORTUNITY FOR THEATRE STUDENTS!
Following the success of last year’s 8 day intensive unarmed and Elizabethan rapier course with E15 alumni Keith Wallis’ ‘Master at Arms’ company, we have been offered the opportunity to do the same again. Here’s his website https://www.masteratarms.org/ (we’re even in the snazzy photo slideshow).
This time, we are thinking about doing Longsword, which is very cool. Some of us did the course with Keith last year and cannot recommend him enoug...h. Some of you may have had an email to say it was to be 'Sword and Shield'; this might now change, as the film and stage industry have more need for actors trained in Longsword.
The course entails intensive 8 days of training, followed by an assessed scene where you learn a few lines and perform it to your peers. It’s so much fun, and at the end of it you have a professional Master at Arms qualification. For those of you are interested in a career in acting, this is an invaluable training, as well as a great credit to your eventual Spotlight CV.
Right now, we are gathering interest and have not got set dates or times in mind. So, if you If you think you might want to take part, please drop LLoyd a line at lbootha@essex.ac.uk. If you're alumni, and want to take part, drop him a line as well; if there are places left, we'll see what we can do!
P.S. Below is a photo of the lovely Keith, swinging a Longsword, as well as a glimpse of our workshop last year!

Can't wait to see you next week! Campus has been too quiet without you lot, and there was so much left over chocolate from Christmas that we simply had to eat it all 🙃 (health and safety, you understand).
We're back in the office now, so if you have any questions please drop us a line, and if you have already, we'll make our back to you soon!

A new play by our very own Head of Department, Dr Liz Kuti will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on 23 December.
Sea Longing tells the story of renowned folklore expert Robert Whyman who has spent his life developing an extensive collection of selkie stories and folktales. With time running out, the tables are turned as he gives a final interview of his own, excavating his own mythology and personal origins in a story-telling journey which takes him to some unexpectedly dark place...s.
The play stars Stephen Dillane and features music by Radiohead drummer Philip Selway.
Listen to Sea Longing at 12noon on Sunday 23 December on BBC Radio 3.
