It considers the whole person, and the homeopath’s task is to select a remedy which matches not only the person’s physical symptoms, but also his or her emotional and mental characteristics.
Symptoms of illness are viewed as a distress call from the body. Homeopathy stimulates your natural healing power to bring you back into healthy balance. Remedies appear to do this by sending a signal to the body in a language it can understand.
Homeopathy is based on the principle that “like cures like”: a substance can cure a disease if it has the ability to produce symptoms similar to those of the disease in a healthy person. The substances are made into remedies by a process of repeated dilution and vibration to a point where only the energy of the substance remains. This makes homeopathic remedies non-addictive, and free from toxic side effects, so that they can be used safely even in babies.

In order to find the right remedy, a thorough medical history is necessary, as well as an understanding of who you are as an individual and how you are affected by your illness. The initial consultation usually lasts one and a quarter hours for a long-standing condition.

All the information from the consultation is carefully considered, and a remedy is prescribed. This is given in tablet, pill or liquid form, as a single dose or repeatedly, depending on the strength. The remedy is allowed to act for about a month in non-acute cases, and you will be asked to note any changes that take place.
At the follow-up appointment, which lasts about 40 minutes, the response to the remedy is discussed. There is a wide variation in the way individuals respond to the remedies, some experiencing improvements or a curative effect shortly after taking the remedy, and others requiring more than one remedy before an effect is observed. Once the symptoms have started to go in the direction of cure, the time between follow-ups is gradually increased.
If as a result of homeopathic treatment, your need for conventional medication is reduced, this can be discussed with your GP, and appropriate action taken.
