About Dulwich Art Group

The Dulwich Art Group organises untutored drop-in life drawing and painting sessions open to people of all abilities and structured formally tutored groups to support artists.

Dulwich Art Group Description

The Dulwich Art Group organises life drawing and painting sessions which are open to people of all abilities. We tend not to call them Art Classes as with no formal tutor, artists are free to pursue their own approach to painting or drawing. However if a student wishes to have guidance or direction there are plenty of members who will offer advice, some of whom are lifelong art educators. Looking over the shoulder of someone who appears to know what they are doing can often be as much education as is required.

If you’ve been thinking of taking Art Classes or an Art Course these groups may well support or supplement. As with an Art Course there is a sense of progression, not through any outside agency but through regular and honest application and effort. Making a commitment to oneself to draw seriously just once a week can have benefits that reach beyond the immediate image produced. The neural pathways opened up through observation and mark making can suffuse other areas of ones life and work with creativity – drawing brings good things!

A pose is usually set for a period of three weeks, each weekly session runs for three hours which can feel quite long if you’re not used to it but it does give you a chance to make some headway, try a number of approaches or depict the model from a number of positions by moving around the room.

There is a break in the middle for refreshments and conversation

Each session is paid for at half-time on the day allowing flexibility, you don’t have to commit to a whole term for example. In fact we run throughout the year and stay open through the holidays too other than a couple of weeks in August and Christmas and Easter weekends.

The group is run by artists for artists and at £10 it is very good value compared to local authority run courses. The open structure is also a point of difference that many people find appealing along with the hard to find longer poses.

We are now also offering tuition in the form of skill specific workshops and atelier style courses. Have a look at "learning" on our website to see the current offerings

Exhibition review and models for the week.
The morning after an exhibition can seem like a new beginning. Ondrej Rypacek (the tall guy in the picture below) put it well when he said that what was important was that the work had been witnessed, and in that transaction between artist and viewer there is a release which allows the artist to move on. - https://mailchi.mp/b3f…/dulwich-art-gro up-newsletter-2695453

Every year we have an exhibition of works by tutors and students. It is a fun event with over thirty artists showing. Works range in price from a few pounds for some greetings cards, tens of pounds for small affordable pieces with larger more considered works up to £500.
Paintings in oil, acrylic and water colour, drawings in pastels charcoals and pencil in a variety of genres. Typically there will be some figurative work as we draw and paint a lot from the model but there w...ill be landscape and still life well represented too.
It's always good to look at art and our studio is a relaxed space to do it in. If you want to talk to the artists they would be delighted but similarly if you just want to wander around and explore be our guest, no pressure.
The Private View is from 6.00pm - 9.00pm Saturday the 11th May. If you wish to come to the private view please contact us and we will put you on the guest list.

Why does everyone love Clare Haward?

When life drawing, short poses are excellent for training the eye and the hand and building the ability to sum up the essence of the figure with economy. The first hour will have poses between 1 minute and five minutes and in the second hour longer poses will be held with longer still in the third hour.
This is a familiar format for life drawing sessions which most of us find very satisfactory.
Whilst the session runs for three hours it is possible to attend one, two or three... hours, as works for you. Joining or leaving the group happens promptly on the hour. Just pay £5 for each hour you wish to attend.
Our studio is a good size and well equipped with professional lighting. We have easels, drawing boards clips and so on and paper to buy at below high street prices, eg. A1 110gsm cartridge 20p per sheet. We have charcoal stubs available and new sticks cost 50p.

@benhopeartist 's paintbox and demo piece he did for us yesterday. There was a lot of interest the fast drying medium he uses which sets up opaque darks fast enough for him to overpaint in a single session. If only getting a tube of the stuff would enable us to paint as well as him!

Ever wondered what to do with those yellow pages they insist on putting through your letterbox? John Bonallack uses them to suck the solvent off his brushes after a dip. Just tear the page off and you have another clean sheet of absorbent newsprint. Enlightened. #oilpainting #pleinairpainting #pleinair
