Dulwich College Description

Dulwich College is an academically selective, socially inclusive independent boys’ school in south London, with a distinguished tradition of inspired teaching and genuine scholarship. In the words of a Dulwich College Y9 pupil: ‘Dulwich College is one of the most prestigious schools in the country and home to hundreds of happy pupils and teachers. ’

With some 1, 450 boys and set in 70 acres, Dulwich College also has a Kindergarten and Nursery – DUCKS - for both girls and boys aged 6 months to 7 years.

In addition, there are five Dulwich College partner schools (four in China and one in South Korea). Dulwich College Singapore will open in August 2014.

• Alumni include Sir Ernest Shackleton (1887-90) - Antarctic explorer- G Wodehouse (1894-1900) - comic novelist and Raymond Chandler (1900-05) - detective and thriller writer - Rupert Penry-Jones (1982-89) & Chiwetel Ejiofor (1990-95) – actors - Sir Peter Bazalgette (1962-71) - Chairman of Arts Council England - Jeremy Deller (1977-84) - conceptual, video and installation artist
• The full colours blazer is awarded to those who make a significant contribution to the College community outside the classroom
• Dulwich College houses the world’s most important Jacobean theatre archive
• Dulwich College is home to the world’s oldest stuffed Abyssinian wild cat
• The James Caird was left to Dulwich College by Shackleton’s school friend, John Quiller Rowett. It was his to give as a result of his sponsorship of the explorer’s last expedition, Quest.
• The Science Block was destroyed by a flying V1 on July 10 1944
• 837 boys gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars. Five Victoria Crosses were awarded in the Great War and two VCs and a George Cross in the Second World War.
• The College motto is Detur Gloria Soli Deo (Let glory be given to God alone)
