Dyfi Osprey Project Description

The Dyfi Osprey Project is now closed for the 2017 season. We will reopen in late March 2018. when you will be able to join our team in the visitor centre to see and hear images from the nest on four large LED screens then head to the hide where you can use telescopes to view the birds at the nest site. Enjoy a walk around the reserve where you can see eight species of Warblers, Common Lizards and bank voles. If you are lucky you might get a sighting of the elusive Otters or Dormouse. Meet our herd of Water Buffalo and watch them as they graze or swim in the pool.

Facilities include a gift shop, car park, toilets and a Cafe selling drinks, sandwiches, rolls, ice creams. We have a suggested donation scheme of £3 for individuals, a weekly pass for £6 and a ticket for the whole season for £12. All donations go towards funding the Dyfi Osprey Project.

How are you all doing?
Apologies for no Christmas Blog last month - we've been away as well as fighting infections. We're all now back, however, and planning for DOP 2019 is going well.
... When will Telyn return this year? Will we see the 2017 birds back this year - Aeron, Menai and Eitha? How is the Dyfi Wildlife Centre project going? What camera and Live Streaming goodness will we see in 2019?
Let's discuss..
Blogs, posts and a lot more coming your way starting next weekend :-)

Advent Day 24
As we have become accustomed to by now, Monty stayed on the Dyfi this year until his whole family had departed south.
... Telyn - migrated at 11:31 on Aug 28th
Dinas - migrated at 11:51 on Aug 29th
Helyg - migrated at 18:00 on Sept 2nd
Alys - migrated at 09:21 on Sept 4th
Monty - migrated at 10:16 on Sept 7th
Here's a short video of Monty taken during his last week with us this year, including him actually starting his migration journey.
Hope they're all safe and well :-)

In March every year we climb up to the nest with scaffolding to assess for any winter storm damage and any structural problems.
... We also have to make sure that the nest is strong enough to withstand any upcoming summer storms, which can be devastating and fatal to young chicks. Once we leave there's nothing we can do then for the rest of the season.
Thankfully, and despite her relative inexperience, Telyn did a fantastic job of keeping herself and her three youngsters fed and protected from this year's June storm, despite the nest falling apart around her...

Here's another fabulous shot from the trail-cam on the feeding perch... Telyn taking a well earned rest from incubation duties as Monty starts his shift.
... Telyn is one of those rare examples of a female osprey having bred at two nest locations with a significant distance between the two.
In 2017 she started to breed and laid eggs at a nest at her natal Rutland home. However, well before any eggs hatched, both Telyn and her Rutland-born male were disturbed by geese and both birds abandoned the nest and, therefore, breeding for that year.
The pair did not stay together and a few weeks later we saw Telyn - or Blue 3J as she was then - prospecting at both the Dyfi and Glaslyn nests here in Wales.
So, a fairly unusual case of a female having set up a nest at two locations, well over 100 miles apart.
At small recovering colonies - like those in Wales and England - this is quite rare; it happens more frequently in more normalised populations (like Scotland), however, where competition for nest sites, mates and food are significantly higher.

Despite Alys hogging the nest for herself during the last two weeks of August, we kept a pretty close eye on her sister, Helyg.
... She was usually to be seen on the feeding perch by the 360 Observatory - here she is on 31st August, a couple of days before she migrated.
What a stunning bird.
