Easton Walled Gardens Description

Welcome to Easton Walled Gardens

Easton Walled Gardens is one of the finest walled gardens in the UK.

Set in the heart of middle England’s beautiful countryside, the 400-year-old gardens are brimming with bulbs and flowers.

Once the site of an extravagant stately home, the landscape owes a lot to the Tudor and Jacobean period, with the gardens cascading down terraces from the site of the old house.

And with the River Witham flowing through the estate, as well as a beautiful valley surrounding the ancient walls, it is easy to see why Easton Walled Gardens holds a firm place as one of the UK’s hidden gems.

Famed for snowdrops and sweet peas, Easton Walled Gardens hosts a number of specialist showcases and experiences throughout the year. This year, between 16-24 February (11am – 4pm daily), visitors will be able to see thousands of naturalised Snowdrops and Aconites decorating the gardens, woodlands and terraces, including Galanthus nivalis and Galanthus Flore Pleno, which literally means 'with full flower'.

Speaking about the upcoming Snowdrop week, Lady Ursula Cholmeley, owner of Easton Walled Gardens, comments: “As the harsh winter winds give way to spectacular colours and scents of spring, a picturesque white carpet rolls out across the gardens, with thousands of delicate snowdrops emerging from their thawing surroundings.

“With ice white bells trembling in the breeze, February is transformed into a winter wonderland. When you take a walk around the gardens in Snowdrop Week, you can really appreciate why President Franklin Roosevelt described the gardens as ‘almost too good to be true’ when he visited Easton. ”

The branches of the Squadron apple tree are weighing heavy today. As you can see, we’ve had a bumper crop this year and they are so sweet and delicious 😋

Despite the low light and frosty mornings, these white sweet peas in the White Space Garden are still flowering! They were grown from a very late sowing with just enough time to grow before the days started to shorten in late June. Their scent takes me straight back to summer. ___________________ We sell 50 varieties of sweet pea seed in our online shop on the website listed in our bio. ⬆️ All the varieties have been trialled and grown by us and we believe they are the best ...available. Have a look at the descriptions of each variety as there is a huge range from the oldest highly scented sweet pea to the delicious new colours bred this century. Sarah Raven reckons December is a good time to sow and she is right you can sow now but probably only in the south of the country - if you are further North we advise waiting until the days start to draw out in January and sow undercover. I hope you enjoy looking through our range. 🌸🌱🌸🌱🌸🌱

One of our favourite sweet peas. Lathyrus odoratus ‘Duo Salmon.’
This is a great sweet pea both for garden decorating and for cutflowers. The bi-coloured flowers are borne in profusion and the scent weaves itself around the garden. We grow over 50 varieties of the best sweet peas each year and this one has been amongst them for 5 years running.
Grow Duo Salmon with Kingfisher (the blue pea in the background) as a complementary colour or try it with Mollie Rilstone for a bun...ch of the best pink sweet peas.
These beauties are all for sale as seeds along with many other interesting and scented sweet peas on the visiteaston.co.uk website.
They can be sown this week or given as stocking or Christmas presents. 💚💗🌱🌸Hope you enjoy this taste of summer on a cold evening!

We were regular visitors last year, we loved it so much we are now 'Friends of the Gardens' and will be coming even more often. The space, the flowers, the veggies, the ideas and more than anything the peace and tranquility (even with testing two year olds) Love, love, love the place Xx

User

We visited on Sunday and having gone to different places for the past three years running to view the breathtaking snowdrops at this time of year, we can vouch that this is by far the best snowdrop display we have seen. We will without a doubt be back and would also love to enjoy your gardens during the summer months as well. The yummy cake and coffee finished off a lovely afternoon perfectly :-)

User

Visited today for the first time..... WOW, A gem of a "secret garden"! It's now 15 years after the restoration of the garden began. Beautiful vistas have been restored. Formal and kitchen gardens. Wildlife habitats, with bird hides so all the family can see our native species.

The tea rooms are a delight, with friendly, helpful staff.

We will be back. A great place to bring your visitors!!

User

Very very nice hoping to visit again in the summer. The little book we purchased was very informative and the plants we got were a very good price, toilets were nice and clean always a good pointer , would recommend others to visit

User

This oasis is heaven. Such a beautiful garden with balls and croquet for the kids ( big ones included!) Super light lunches using locally sourced bread and cheeses and drinks. Coffee is excellent! ( proper) Great Tea selection, home made cakes. Wonderful staff. Great shop, plant centre and history room.

We'll worth taking a picnic on a sunny day. Perfect for the whole family and reasonable wheelchair access to most parts.

User

This is such a special place and a lovely meet-up spot with friends. There's always something to see in the beautiful gardens, and the tea room is fab with the excellent 'Gardener's Lunch' always being my choice. If you have the opportunity the 'Meadow Retreat' is a little piece of heaven which you can hire for the day :-)

User

This is a stunning place! We stayed at the Gatehouse lodge for 3 nights and it was sumptuous! Warm, cosy, comfortable and perfect for a break. We walked the gardens every evening...the tulips and the ancient trees were so beautiful! A little road noise from the A1, but you can't hear it inside, & we were made to feel very welcome.

The history behind how the gardens came to be is also fascinating, with a long and noble past. Sir Fred and his wife Ursula have done a great job!

User

One of my favourite places. I often meet with friends in The Meadow Retreat - ideal for a picnic and a chat followed by a wander around the gardens and a pot of tea at the tearoom. Yesterday I scaled up a little (!) hiring The Coach House for an early birthday celebration with around 75 friends and family. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their day, whether they were 1 or 80 years old, with several commenting how wonderful the gardens were and that they'd be visiting again. As always the staff were friendly and helpful. If you've never been add it to your 'to do' list and you'll go back time and time again.

User

Lovely grounds to enjoy, the tea room is 5 star and reasonably priced. Good selection of plants for sale too

User

I have been with my 2 year old twice now and we both love it. We visited for the Autumn Market and again yesterday for Children's Week. It's a beautiful place with plenty for little ones to explore. We have done the wren trial on both visits and we love how the boxes were in different places on each visit. We had great fun pumpkin rolling and we are looking forward to visiting in spring to see the bulbs we planted blooming. The tearoom serves lovely food and even with the long queues when we visited the Autumn Market the service was really quick and the food delicious. We look forward to visiting many more times in the future.

User

I am a little biased because I work here but Easton Walled Gardens is such a lovely place to visit. I bring my children regularly as there is so much space to run around and things to discover.

The tearoom serves really scrummy lunches and divine homemade cakes and the gift shop is full to the brim with gorgeous things!

Highly recommend spending a few hours here with family and friends, it's a really lovely day out.

User

Having lived in the area for nearly 20 years I’m sorry to say I’ve never visited but have always been intrigued by the what was inside. Wow we weren’t disappointed an amazing restoration, so much work in such a short period of time. Even with the gardens only just waking from their winter slumber such a relaxing and tranquil place to spend the afternoon after a lovely lunch in the tearoom. Will definitely return to see the gardens in their full splendour

User

Four of us had a great day at the gardens which were looking beautiful, especially the alliums, iris, euphorbias and early roses.

It was a treat to get my book on Walled Gardens signed by Jules Hudson and he was very friendly and chatted to us for a while. It was my second visit to these wonderful gardens and lovely to see different flowers to the ones which were out in September when we came.

User

Fabulous day out at E W G yesterday, gardens and grounds were fabulous, good variety of craft, food & drink stalls, enough to hold ones interest all day with the added bonus of a great cafe serving tasty food in double quick time. Looking forward to the next event.

User

Been there 4 or 5 times now, and had wonderful fun each time (Me, my wife and our 4 year old daughter). It is the little things that make it so much fun - the moving wren boxes, the footballs and hula-hoops, the swing that you "discover" and then never forget (at least our daughter does not forget), the pile of leaves layered up to you can jump in them, the plant a bulb etc. Oh - and not to forget the craft and Christmas fairs!

All in all, a great time, all within some beautiful grounds.

User

Appologies for this mornings escapades, i truly was as confused that i couldnt find somewhere to pay as you were to find me taking pictures in your garden. Had somone questioned me sooner and had i opened my eyes that bit fuller i would not have been there. Will be back soon if you will have me, have a lovely rest of the day.

User

A beautiful place with so many interesting "Nooks and crannies" to explore and enjoy. Thoroughly recommended .We enjoyed last Sundays special event (Autumn Market) very much. But despite the people in the restaurant working solidly I was over 20 minutes in the queue waiting to be served for our coffee . Obviously due to the popularity of the event but perhaps some thought could be made as to improve this on such occasions .

User

We had a great day on Saturday, however the fact that people try and pay to come in/renew their annual membership/pay for the goods brought all on one pay desk and in one room is total madness!!!!!!!!!! Also impossible to get a drink under cover, so many people! Sad sad sad as all those things rather spoilt what should have been a great day out.

User

I visited the gardens last week during Sweet Pea week we were very lucky with the weather.

The setting of the gardens is gorgeous with superb views across the country side.

There's an awful lot of walking and you need to be quite fit some of our group found it hard in places.

Saying that though most of us enjoyed having a go on the swing attached to the tree, watching to see what birds we could see, spotting bees and butterflies.

As I said we were very lucky to have a lovely sunny day the visit wouldn't have been enjoyable had it been a wet day.
