Our first weekly Halaqah took place yesterday, 12 November 2018, in the main hall at Ebrahim College and we were overwhelmed by the number of attendees who participated in the event. Shaykh Shams discussed the history of Halaqahs, why EC felt it was needed to provide these free informal talks and introduced this term's discussions on Muhasibi’s treatise on spirituality with Shaykh Abdul Fattah’s commentary.
EC will be providing these Halaqahs every Monday from 6-7pm. Attendance is FREE but registration is required: ebrahimcollege.org.uk/halaqahs-gatherings

The Halaqah is a study of a short treatise on Islamic spirituality by the 3rd century scholar Imam Al-Harith al-Muhasibi titled Risalah al-Mustarshidin (Treatise for the Seekers of Guidance). An English translation exists by Zaid Shakir which is worth purchasing to increase the benefit you will take from the Halaqah, you can purchase a copy here.
In this book, Imam Al-Muhasibi presents most of the major ideas that would both serve as the basis for a full program of spiritual ...development and comprise an insightful overview of a system of Islamic moral psychology. He examines in great depth and penetrating insight the psychological motivations and justifications for moral thought and action and correspondingly the associated bases of immorality. In so doing, he has provided a road map that any person can follow to overcome the guiles of his fundamental enemies: the world, the ego, the whims of the soul, and Satan. (Taken from Zaid Shakir’s introduction to his translation).
In the Halaqah, Shaykh Shams will be translating the text line by line and will discuss in some detail how the meanings should be applied to our lives and how it is essential that we consider deeply how to orient our lives in an age where selfish desires are strong and spirituality is weak.
An excellent commentary of the treatise was written by the well-known scholar of recent times, Shaykh Abdul Fattah Abu Ghuddah. This commentary complements the original work and brings the meanings to life by supplementing the text with references and stories of the piety of our early predecessors. The commentary will form an integral part of the discussions in the Halaqah, inshaAllah.
Attendance is FREE but registration is required due to limited spaces

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was the most generous person, even more generous than the strong uncontrollable wind (in readiness and haste to do charitable deeds). (Extract: Bukhari 6)
