About Eltham Palace And Gardens

Art Deco meets Medieval and Tudor with gardens full of wonderful surprises

Eltham Palace And Gardens Description

Immerse yourself in 1930s Art Deco decadence at Eltham Palace, one of the most enchanting visitor attractions in London. Built by the wealthy Courtauld family next to the remains of Eltham Palace, childhood home of Henry VIII, it’s among the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in England.

The stunning entrance hall, marvellous panelled dining room, luxurious bathroom, and the magnificent medieval Great Hall, are just some of the highlights.

And with its beautiful gardens, and plenty of places for a picnic, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Full of wonderful surprises, Eltham Palace is the perfect choice for a great day out in South London.

The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, the UK’s premier all male theatre company, invite you to join them this summer for Shakespeare’s spellbinding masterpiece, The Tempest.
This play of soaring poetry, high comedy and tender love examines the power of true love, our capacity for vengeance and what it takes to forgive.
Bring a chair and a picnic, and spend a glorious summer evening watching this enchanting, fast-paced production of one of Shakespeare’s finest plays. Performed in the open air with Elizabethan costumes, music and dance.

What a beautiful place! You would never know you were in London! Some stunning examples of Art Deco and the gardens are beautifully kept. Cafe wasn't too expensive, could do with a bit more choice of sandwiches but lots of gorgeous looking cakes! Kids play area was a huge hit with my 4 and 6 year old and the house itself had loads to keep them interested, searching for the stamps in the rooms to stamp their sheets they were given at the beginning plus loads of things to dress up in! We will definitely be returning

User

Visited the house earlier this year and came back to see the gardens today, just in time to catch the tulips. Beautiful! Had a fabulous day enjoying the flowers and the sunshine topped off with a great talk about planting tulips in pots. Really interesting. Would definitely come back for more.

User

My second visit in a couple of years and I love the new basement exhibits and the new cafe and play area is a good addition. My one and only criticism is I'd love to see a few more artefacts around the house...ornaments , glasses, dining utensils and the likes....even if labelled that these are just representatives of what may have been used in the house xx other than that ....I adore the house and gardens and definitely want to visit again xx

User

Lovely place to visit. I often bring my children here. Definitely worth a visit :)

User

Love Eltham Palace - it's a unique place you can visit again and again. Fabulous architecture, furniture and gardens. The unrestrained public access to the rooms is unparalleled. Looking forward to more visits in the future!

User

If I could live anywhere in London, it would be here. Fabulous place - very Great Gatsby!

User

I have been wanting to see this since the restoration and wow just wow can't wait to go back!

User

Great day out. Perfect for hot day. Plenty of shelters and places for picnic. One of the best places to visit in Kent. It is really worth.

User

Excellent for children of all ages, lovely grounds good entertainment from the soldiers and the kids loved the assault course.

User

Eltham Palace boast both beautiful architectural buildings full of history and amazing gardens. My biggest regret was visiting in September when a lot of the flowers were coming to the end of the their life. I can only imagine that during the peak seasons the colours and flowers would be spectacular!

Still the grounds were amazing and very well presented. The art deco style to the building really shows off the history. Beautiful and authentic.

My wife and I plan to return around Easter next year when hopefully the flowers will be in bloom!

Only word of advice, please take care of some of the older rugs which combined with the wood flooring can make for a slippery surface.

User

A great place to visit with delightful gardens

User

Very enjoyable day - nice lunch and coffee shop - nice to wander around the lovely gardens and finished off an interesting tour of the Palace.

User

Interesting place. Gardens good though am sure truely beautiful in the summer, visited late March so not at the best time. Bit disappointed with the audio guide. Get the intention was to bring the place to life as it was but felt a little short on information. Still worth a visit to view the interiors and appreciate the linking of medieval to Deco.

User

Interesting place with a lovely Medieval Hall attached to 1930s living quarters - alas no sign of any Elizabeth buildings but lots of history. Good interactive information using earphones. Lovely shop and cafe which services excellent food. Staff we’re really friendly and helpful. As it was raining we didn’t get to see the grounds - perhaps next time.

User

Eltham Palace offers you the chance to be led around by one of the owner's guests. Plenty of information to read and lots of furniture of the period. My favourite parts of the house were the ceilings in the entrance hall and the dining room. The Courtaulds moved the classical architectural style to a new level through such features. Plenty of lovely items to choose from the shop and cafe as well. It's a shame that staff were trying to make me guess where I should go to to gain admission as well as being quite rough in reprimanding me do walking on the entrance hall mat. No full marks for these reasons.

User

Really nice place. However, if you are going make sure you check that there isn't an event on the day. We went and there was a jousting tournament on (not sure of the connection but lets go with it) as a result the place was awash with families banging and crashing about everywhere and we didn't really get a quite moment at all anywhere in the gardens. This was also true inside the house, the staff had placed animals around the rooms for children to find. As a result all you got was corridors full of screaming kids running back and forth shouting FOUND IT FOUND IT!!! How very Artdeco. Oh and sack the cafe staff. If I, and everyone else, are waiting 20 minutes in an endless queue to be served a coffee, just to give up....sack your staff. So tip...go when it's quiet, bring your own coffee.

User

Had a great time at Eltham Palace lights up, the staff were brilliant and really helpful. I'm disappointed that this was advertised as acssesable to all! I had my daughter in her wheel chair and it was far from accessible. We could manage as she is only small but for adults who are wheel chair users or unsteady on their feet I wouldn't advise this to them.

User

Difficult to escape from the gardens. Closed bridges, gates and paths. Overcrowded cafe with long and slow moving queue for food.

User

What a load of rubbish, nothing enchanting, not worth the money to see the christmas enchanting lights. No christmas twinkly lights. No musical spectacular lights, a couple of projections of knights in armour but really naff! Will never bother to go again!
