🎉Uniquely Distinctive Polish Christmas Traditions – You just have to know them all! 😁🎄
Poland, as a largely Catholic country, takes Christmas very seriously. Polish traditions are uniquely distinctive. We choose the most popular ones for you, to share the magic spirit of Christmas in Poland:
... 1. Waiting for the first star in the sky 🌠 Many Poles wait until the first star appears in the sky before sitting down to eat family dinner on 24th December. This tradition commemorates the Star of Bethlehem, which guided the Wise Men to the birthplace of Jesus Christ.
2. Serving 12 dishes (no meat is eaten!) 🍲 A traditional Polish Christmas Eve dinner consists of 12 dishes, which suppossed to give you good luck and happiness for the upcoming 12 months. Also, for Catholics, the 12 dishes symbolize Jesus’ 12 disciples.
3. Sharing an “opłatek" 🥖 Opłatek is a wafer made of flour and water, usually presenting a religious image. Every person gets one and then shares pieces of it with everyone at the table. Sharing the wafer is accompanied by exchanges of good wishes.
4. Leaving one empty seat at the table 🍽 A place is often left empty at the table for ”an unexpected guest”. Polish people say that no one should be alone or hungry on that special day, therefore, if someone unexpectedly knocks at the door – they are welcomed. While this rarely happens nowadays, the tradition requires greeting strangers and treating them as family – and that is what Polish people do!
5. Singing carols 🎶 There are very many carols sung in Poland! Among the most popular ones are “Wśród nocnej ciszy” (Within nights silence), ”Cicha noc” (Silent night),”Bóg się rodzi” (God is born), “Lulajże Jezuniu” (Sleep baby Jesus) and “Dzisiaj w Betlejem” (Today in Bethlehem). The oldest carols date back to medieval times!
6.. Święty Mikołaj brings you presents🎅 Right after Christmas supper comes the most exciting moment (not only to the youngest!) – people exchange Christmas presents. However, traditionally, the presents are brought to people by “Święty Mikołaj” (St Nicholas/Santa Claus) – but only if you have been good!) BEWARE! If you haven’t, Santa Claus may give you “rózga” – a birch-rod!
7.. Attending the Mass at midnight👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Christmas Eve is finished when the whole family goes to Church for a Midnight Mass service (midnight between 24th and 25th December). It commemorates the prayers of the shepherds who were on their way to Bethlehem. This is one of the most important Polish traditions and religious celebrations.
8. Wishing everyone merry Christmas!⭐️🎁 In Polish, Merry Christmas is ‘Wesołych Świąt’! You better know this phrase as everyone will be using it during Christmas!
And lastly – should you celebrate it – wishing you all very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! 🎉🎉🎉

We were picked up at our Airbnb in Warsaw promptly! Our driver was very professional and we felt safe from the moment of pick up until he dropped us off! Our trip was memorable and we will always be grateful to our driver, especially—it was 4+ hours to Auschwitz and 4 hours back...wow!

User

We were a party of 6 for our sons 21st. From start to finish the experience was superb. The mini bus from the airport to hotel was on time and almost a little guide it’s self! We did the Auschwitz tour, I paid a little extra for our tour and it was worth every penny. The Company kept us up to date every step of the way,, without being to much.

We will use this company again when we go back to visit the Salt mines.

User

We used this company for the airport transfer, Auschwitz and Salt Mine.

What a great company. Nothing was too much trouble, Konrad, I think his name is, sorted an issue for us between the airport and the drop off. He also took us to the salt mine. Very polite.

Patryk was our other driver. A credit to your company. Very chatty which we (3 ladies 45-50) enjoyed.

I would highly recommend this company for all your trips. WHEN I go back to Krakow I will use this company again.

User

We used Escape2Poland for an Auschwitz tour. The minibus arrived on time to pick us up from our hotel and was very clean and comfortable. It was a good journey and the tour guide was excellent. I would definitely recommend them and it was really good value too

User

We booked two trips before leaving the UK - Auschwitz and the salt mines. On the day of our first trip we waited at the requested pick up point. The mini bus arrived on time, checked us off the list and we then picked up others. My husband is a very nervous passenger but Jan was a fantastic ,safe driver and my husband was very relaxed. We were fortunate to have Jan take us on our second trip. Again, arrived on time, journey very enjoyable! The minibuses are very comfortable and we would recommend escape2poland. In fact we are returning to Krakow next year and Will be booking a trip to zakopane with them.

User

We booked this tour in advance of our trip to Krakow paying that little bit extra for the Premium trip which consisted of a very comfortable 6 passenger Mercedes people carrier which was worth that extra cost.

We were met outside of the Radisson Blu hotel by a very friendly Patrick who was our driver for the return trip. We were fortunate enough to have shared the journey with two other couples who were a pleasure to be with. The trip also included a very informative video which was of excellent quality lasting just under an hour. The whole experience was extremely well executed and included very informative tour guide at both Auschwitz and Birkenau (Using Headsets at Auschwitz) and a jump the queue service. We would have no problem recommending the very professional service offered by Escape to Poland. Not only does it represent good value for money but has probably been one of the best tours the we have ever experienced. Thanks again to Patrick and the tour guide.

User

We booked an hotel, four excursions, and pick up and return to the airport through Escape2 Poland. Everything worked better than our best expectations. The drivers were on time, accomplished and cheerful. The tours guides were excellent - very knowledgable and able to answer tourist questions. Their English was consistently good and able to lighten the mood when their charges were beginning to find the going tough. Some of the excursions involved a lot of walking, but were very interesting and informative. We stayed in the Kazimierez Hotel, located in the Jewish Quarter. The staff were very helpful; the breakfast was interesting if a bit different, and the room was very comfortable. We will be contacting Explore2Poland to help us with our next visit to Poland which we will definitely be making.

User

We booked a private trip for 5 from Krakow. We were collected from our hotel and driven to Auschwitz where we met our guide for the day. Our guide was well informed and dealt with the heavy emotion of the subject of the Holocaust in a sensitive and respectful manner. She led us through Auschwitz and let us linger where we needed to. We were driven onto Birkenau with our guide who led us through the camp there with information on the prisoners, the extraordinary upscaling of the extermination of so many people and gave us details and information that personalised their predicament. We were driven back to our hotel directly with heavy hearts.

I highly recommend this company; they were helpful before booking and provided a good quality service all round. This trip is hard to get right, but Escape 2 Poland and our guide Marianne gave us the best experience we could have had given the place and subject matter.

User

Very efficient and good service thank you . Booked hotel, pick up and tours. Had a lovely walking tour with Paulina on a sunny Saturday morning . She was very personable and excellent. Also did the Schindler tour with her , again v good and informative but we did find the actual factory visit just too crowded to be able to appreciate . But many thanks to Paulina for a very informative morning. The day trip to Auchwich went smoothly , found our guide a bit disappointing but other than than that cannot fault how we were looked after and transported. Obviously a very emotional kind of experience and hard to take it all in. You need all the time allocated there as there is a lot to see and it is a very busy place. I would totally recommend booking with escape2poland. Thank you very much . Mairi and Sarah

User

The tour to Auschwitz was an incredibly sobering but excellent experience from start to finish. We were picked up on time from our hotel, the driver was very pleasant and ensured that we all knew where we were going and where to meet afterwards.

The guide at Auschwitz was fantastic. Her English was very good, we had time to look at the various exhibits without feeling rushed and her extensive knowledge made the tour. Sadly, I do not remember her name but we visited on 16th Dec. I would highly recommend, this tour exceeded my expectations.

User

Thank you Escape2Poland! Airport/Hotel transfers; Auschwitz-Birkenau & Salt mine tours. All carried out professionally by first class staff...office/drivers/guides. Efficient, friendly and helpful. Guide was very knowledgeable. All went very smoothly throughput our stay in Krakow (group of 4 friends). Good value. Very happy to recommend and will use again... Andy

I did, "The Schindler List" tour with my parents when we stayed in Krakow. I have always been fascinated with this story. Our tour guide was great. I wish I got her name but she was a local of Krakow and did a great job making the tour come to life. She would give background details of each building we visited as well as teaching us about the customs of Krakow. Highly recommend especially if you want to see the sites of where the movie took place and also pivotal events in the Holocaust in Krakow.

User

Escape2Poland, organised the hotel, transfer from the airport and three trips. Their attention to detail was brilliant, even texting the day before to remind you of pick up times for the various tour, transfers back to airport etc. The Hotel they organised was exactly as they said. The costs for trips and transfer was value for money, and the drivers were always on time. For a hassle free break book with this company.

User

Booked the Auchswitz tour, the service was excellent and the driver was punctual and the journey to the camp was well driven. The tour of the camp was amazing and enjoyable in a very sad way. The guide was exceptional and very knowledgeable. Would highly recommend.

User

Booked a package through Escape2Poland and cannot fault them at all. I was sceptical doing everything online but so glad I did.

From the conformation email, to the texts informing me of pick up times. Everything ran how they said it would.

The hotel was lovely and the tour to Auschwitz and Birkenau were well organised with a great English spoken guide, and it all ran like clockwork.

I would definitely recommend and wouldn't hesitate to use again should we return to Poland.

User

The Auschwitz Birkenau tour was really informative, the driver picked us up on time and was polite.

However on the way back, the driver dropped us at a hotel because he was about to start another tour and we had to wait ten minutes in the rain for someone else to take us back.

User

We booked on the Austwich tour in December. Whilst the tour itself was very good there was a couple of things which spoiled the overall experience. We were a party of three and was picked up at 7.30 in the morning from the Radison hotel. The mini bus arrived and we sat on the back seat - leaving one seat remaining. This was eventually taken by the last person to board and there clearly was not enough room. The seats were so cramped on the “luxury coach” that he couldn’t get his knees in front of the seat which meant he had to sit on an angle and practically on my knee. It was far too close for comfort and made the entire journey very uncomfortable indeed. I literally couldnt move. The coach overall was very very cramped and I don’t think this matched the luxury tour we had booked. Secondly whilst the tour itself was fascinating we found that when you were at the back of the group you couldn’t keep up with the guide to what she was saying (which we heard through earphones). So as you were walking through one area she was already talking about the next area which made it quite difficult to fully understand. It was a good informative tour and a bigger bus and a smaller group would have made it five star.

User

Possibly unlucky..no matter how many times I emailed my arrival time to be picked up from airport each confirmation said a different time!! This totally stressed me out as I spent travel time checking texts to ensure we were being picked up on time, all was well in the end, went on the highly emotive, well planned Austwitz tour..and was very very happy, our driver did charge us more than the agreed price..but nothing that would cause me problems.

User

We attended the salt mine tour. This is the first time i have given a bad review, but the experience ruined things for myself and my daughter. On arrival at the salt mine, our guide was late to meet us. When he did finally arrive, we then got to join the queue. It was around and hour and a half we were stood around in the cold, uncertain of what was going on, before gaining entrance to the mines. Once inside, we discovered that our guide was not easy to understand and spoke in a monotone. We found this so off putting that we removed out headsets and noticed that many others had done the same.

In other tours we have done with other companies, any issues were always well handled and we were kept informed of what was going on. The lack of shared knowledge on delays really made the experience tiresome and frustrating.

I certainly would not use this company again.
