About Ethiopian Education Foundation

www. ethio-ed.org - Effective, Measurable, Sustainable - The mission of the Ethiopian Education Foundation (eef), a UK charity, is to provide excellent schooling for very under-privileged yet motivated and academically promising students in Ethiopia.

Ethiopian Education Foundation Description

For all our selected students the scholarships include four years of fully paid tuition, for the period of grade 9-12, at one of EthiopiaŌĆÖs leading private schools including uniforms and school materials. For around 50% of our students who are completely without any supporting relatives, we also provide safe full boarding at one of our student houses. The facilities of these houses such as computer room with internet access, library and recreational as well educational facilities, 1-2-1 mentoring and group seminars can be used and attended by all eef scholars.
After being in operation for 6 years we now have 117 students on our programme out of which the first 34 graduated from high school in 2009 and 2010. All 34 graduates are now studying at university, 14 of them in the medical field and one of our students is studying political science at New York University in Abu Dhabi on a full four year scholarship.

In early January this year we have selected a further 27 scholars starting the programme in July. 20 of our students will graduate, all of them are on track for university admission and two students again have been offered full four year scholarships at New York University in Abu Dhabi.

We are making a remarkable difference to a growing number of academically talented youngsters who would otherwise not have had any chance of even secondary education.

85% of our running cost of approximately ┬Ż70, 000 is covered by donations from committed individuals via our sponsorship programme. The remainder and any additional projects need to be covered annually by donations from the corporate sector, trusts and foundations.

Our programme is based on some core principles that drive everything we do
Measurable Results
We have a thorough selection process, which also includes personally interviewing each shortlisted student, to ensure only the most academically able students join our program. This coupled with the excellent teaching record at our chosen school mean that university entrance is almost guaranteed for all of eefŌĆÖs scholars.

Effectiveness
All work for eef is done on a voluntary basis and our admin costs are covered in full by the trustees and directors. Every cent of every donation goes directly to helping our students.

Sustainability
EefŌĆÖs aim goes beyond ensuring subsistence and improving quality of life. Our programme is designed to empower and motivate young Ethiopians with high potential to become the future leaders of their nation, enabling them to lead the way out of poverty.

Mentoring
In addition to covering the cost of their studentsŌĆÖ education, sponsors are encouraged to develop a direct relationship with their students via email. In many cases our students have no family to rely on and the communication with their sponsors in addition to the eef staff is something they really appreciate and benefit from.
After 12 years in Operation we have over 250 students on our programme. Over 50 have already graduated from university. 8 medical doctors and over 30 engineers have come from our pool of students.

On Monday we had to say goodbye to our amazing Anna. We were lucky to have had her with us for a year during which she was simply outstanding. Full of positive energy and passion she left a huge impression with our students that will last a lifetime. Thank you, Anna, for a wonderful year. You now are a member of the EEF family for life :)

We take the integration of our new students very seriously. This weekend the new G9s came to visit to get to know each other (and some of the older students) a bit better and to meet the new team, Olga and Marius. They have a few more weeks of summer break before officially joining EEF in September.

Meet Marius Cretu, our new Boys Hostel Manager.
Marius holds a degree in Economics and has vast experience, mainly in the financial services sector. Over the years he has volunteered for a variety of charitable organizations and is now keen on dedicating his energy to the social development area full time.
Welcome to EEF, Marius. We promise you an experience you will never forget.

A different kind of appeal today: We're now registered with Amazon Smile, a programme that gives us a 0.5% donation of everything you buy on Amazon.
Process is simple: shop via https://smile.amazon.co.uk/ and select us as your charity of choice. the rest is all automatic. No fees, no difference in prices etc etc ... so you can donate without it costing you anything.
PS it was impossible to select the nicest smile ... this is Bertie, Grade 10 :)

This photo fills us with incredible joy and pride. Meskerem Habtamu is now almost fully qualified as an anaesthetist. During her practice at Asella Hospital, her brother Fekadu - a fully qualified EEF doctor - was also on duty

Last week, to celebrate end of Q3 exams, some of our students went to see a piano concert by the renowned duo Scholtes and Janssens at the Italian Cultural Institute in Addis. What a treat it was.

This weekend we had another visitor. This time from one of our wonderful sponsors, Laura.
Laura had followed our work for a while and decided to co-sponsor the amazing Asesrach. This weekend, the two met. It is always such a wonderful experience when we see our students meet their sponsors.
Of course this is not always possible, but we definitely encourage sponsors to come and visit for a day, or even stay with us in the hostel for a few days where we have guest rooms ready!...
Huge thanks for making this happen, Laura. Asesrach LOVED meeting you!

Just over a week ago we had the honour and great pleasure of a visit from the Hungarian Consul in Ethiopia, D├│ra K├Čvendi.
Not only D├│ra cut the ribbon to officially declare open our brand new kitchen and dining room, she also cooked an amazing Hungarian lunch (Goulash with Paprikas krumpli) for our students.
It was so delicious that our students put on one of our famous talent shows afterwards to say thank you!!
... D├│ra was accompanied by government officials from Egypt, Rwanda and Cameroon, all working for the African Union in Addis Ababa.
We hope that they were impressed with our work and our amazing EEF family.
Huge thanks to D├│ra for making us the amazing lunch!
