We are delighted to announce that Emmy van Deurzen, the renowned philosopher, counselling psychologist and existential psychotherapist, will be speaking with BACP in London next month.
A profile of Emmy van Deurzen
From being born in post-war Netherlands, studying, training and working in France, coming to the UK in 1977 to work with the anti-psychiatrists and going on to create several training organisations, Emmy’s life and 45-year career as a therapist have never been du...ll.
She founded the School of Psychotherapy and Counselling at Regent’s University, the Society for Existential Analysis, the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling at the Existential Academy in London, of which she continues to be Principal. She was the first chair of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy and has chaired and directed many other organisations and institutions.
Her application of philosophical ideas to psychology, psychotherapy, counselling and coaching has been instrumental in establishing the existential paradigm firmly in the UK, Europe and worldwide. She lectures internationally and her seventeen books have been translated into well over a dozen languages.
Emmy's talk:
Existential therapy emphasises the importance of the cultural, political and spiritual dimensions of life, alongside physical, psychological and social ones. Its philosophy invites us to ask the big questions, to set life events in perspective and to be aware of paradoxes and tensions. Existential work is very much about understanding and a search for truth, purpose and meaning.
In this talk Emmy will speak about the intricate connections between her personal experience, her therapeutic framework and her human rights activism. She will bring together elements of philosophy and psychology to raise a number of topical issues and ask some poignant questions.
Programme:
Event registration will begin at 18.30 with Emmy starting her lecture at 19.30. We will have a 30 minute interval where refreshments will be available to purchase. The second part will begin at 21.00 of the evening will be a discussion panel involving Emmy and questions from the audience. The event will finish at 21.45. Venue:
Great Hall The People's Palace Queen Mary University of London 327 Mile End Road London, E1 4NS ‪

New article by Byline on our ESSE clinic for emotional support of EU citizens. We are gathering an enormous amount of information on the way in which the referendum and Brexit have adversely affected EU citizens.
It is a huge scandal and shame to the UK that it is prepared to disenfranchise those who have chosen this country as their home in this way.
We need more support. Do come to the mass lobby of parliament and the human chain formed by the 5 million around the Houses of Parliament on Monday.
