Environmental protection is ingrained in Fairtrade. To sell Fairtrade products, farmers have to improve soil and water quality, manage pests, avoid using harmful chemicals, manage waste, reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and protect biodiversity. Here are eight ways Fairtrade supports farmers to survive climate change threats and reduce their own carbon footprint. 🌿🌍

Climate change hits the poorest in developing countries hardest. This includes people whose livelihoods depend on agriculture. As consumers, we must make more responsible and sustainable choices to support them to preserve their own environment.

The Panama disease puts the banana (the Cavendish variety) under threat of extinction.
Many banana producers are making the decision to invest their Fairtrade Premium into disease control. This can be as simple as purchasing mist blowers to control leaf spot disease or training producers in farm and crop management. Often, it involves mitigation in case the worst happens, for example by ensuring plants are protected. In many cases, the Fairtrade Premium has been the only lifeline to help banana producers out of uncertain positions when disaster strikes

From sugar can in Belize to cotton plants in India, there are over 1.65 million farmers and workers spread across more than 74 countries participating in Fairtrade. 🌍🌿

There are lots of different ethical labels on the market and you might be wondering how you should choose one over another.
Here's why we think you should Choose Fairtrade.

Gold is a symbol of love, power and wealth the world-over. But look behind the glitz and the reality is not so glamorous.
Workers in Fairtrade certified gold mines receive a guaranteed Fairtrade Minimum Price for their gold as well as a Premium to spend on improving their businesses or on community projects, such as education, clean water and healthcare. Fairtrade certification means these small scale-miners meet Fairtrade standards.
This can help them to improve their mining and business practices as well as open the market to generate more sales on better terms. The Fairtrade Gold Standards include strict requirements on working conditions, health and safety, handling chemicals, women’s rights, child labour and protection of the environment.

We must put a stop to this worrying trend and consume more responsibly.
Environmental protection is a key element of Fairtrade’s view of sustainability. Fairtrade Standards require smallholder farmer and larger hired labour production set-ups to comply in key areas. The Standards also promote training for farmers, which can include advice on switching to environmentally friendly practices. This has been shown to lead to good agricultural practices, which have encouraged environmentally sustainable production. The Standards also guide producers in adapting to climate change and mitigate their impact.

We as consumers all have a responsibility when it comes to 'fast fashion' and to ensure we are not exploiting the people behind our clothes.

The new deal between Fairtrade Africa (FTA) and the African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) will see tea, coffee and vegetable farmers fetch better prices from their produce, and have better access to local and global markets.
More than 350,000 tea and coffee farmers will benefit from a new partnership which includes implementation of the Fairtrade mark.

Although most of the coffee trees on Samuel’s farm were planted by his father, he has recently planted additional trees for his grandson. The money from those trees will go towards his education and future.

Trade should be fair. Why would anyone want trade that isn't fair? This is the future, because what the entire world population really, really want, underneath all the bull, is a sustainable world where they are treated fairly. That's really what people want.

They do an amazing job or trying to ensure fair deals for often impoverished producers against large corporate giants, keep up the good work!

Many items in the co-op are fair trade but you have to look closely at the packaging to know.

I think it's only right that everyone is rewarded justly for their efforts. I despair when I see exploitation of anyone for any reason ....a fair price for a valuable service is not too much to ask really in my humble opinion

I have never taken anything for granted, that's the way I was brought up. We always had plenty to go around, andl life was bountiful thanks God.

Seeing the plight of some farmers it's hard to comprehend for all the right reason of hard work an effort they have toiled for months. Some cooperation will exceed far more than they do in profits,is that fair? I support fair trading in a diverse society and to the small farmers I say hurrah, hurrah keep up the hard work your community maybe small but you will grow in numbers,we soon will make scene of it all.

I have never had the pleasure of working/volunteering within such a positive environment in my life. It's obvious that every single person is dedicated to the cause, passionate, kind, & making a huge difference to farmers. We need more organisations and people like this in the world. Fairtrade proves what can be accomplished if good hearted people unite, change IS possible.

I am totally convinced that the work and knowledge and action of the Fairtrade Foundation is one of the most important things happening in the world today! Thank you and keep on keepin' on!!!

For a better world with out the multi national companies controlling the masses . Power to the people and back to the basics of trade

Fairtrade gives people a chance!! Don't let it always be the those with the

fattest wallets that come out on top! You can look for their bananas and coffee,

pay a few pence more, but, change the life of someone who wouldn't otherwise

have a chance!

Fair-trade is , in my opinion , one of the Best Ways of helping people who struggle to earn a Decent Living . Trading Goods , which they have grown ,at a Fair Price promotes Dignity , Pride that they can support their Families and Improve their Education and Living conditions . Much better than carrying a Begging Bowl .

Buying Fairtrade is the least I can do in a world where we have abused food producers so we can have the cheapest.

We need to be paying a fair price for fair work and fair products.

We need them more than ever. Helping to address poverty in a pragmatic way and without the stigma of charity.
