"I was asked what recording of mine I’d put in a time capsule, and it was Respect. Because people want respect – even small children, even babies. As people, we deserve respect from one another.”
On the sad news of her passing last week, we remember Aretha Franklin and her outstanding contribution to music, popular culture and civil rights.
One of four siblings, Aretha Franklin was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1942 and brought up in Detroit by her father – a well-respected B...aptist minister. His charismatic sermons earned him the monkier of the man with the "million-dollar voice" and attracted a number of celebrities to their home, including gospel singers like James Cleveland and Clara Ward, as well as Marting Luther King Jr.
Franklin sang in church from a young age and released her first album in 1956, at the age of 14. She also learned to play gospel piano by ear having rejected traditional lessons. Franklin soon gained recognition for her vocal talents and was signed to Columbia Records and then Atlantic Records throughout the 60s and 70s.
Having sold more than 75 million records throughout her lifetime, Franklin was a phenomenal success and helped bring gospel music into the mainstream. She was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and was awarded 18 grammys. Despite such critical acclaim, Franklin was firmly rooted to movements for civil rights and women's rights. It's well-known that she left a Vogue photo shoot in the 60s upon noticing that all the other models were white.
Franklin will also be remembered for her love of fashion, particularly glamorous gowns and bold hairdos. Every appearance garnered an extravagant ensemble that lived up to her fame as the "Queen of Soul".

Night and Day: 1930s Fashion and Photography 12 October 2018 - 20 January 2019 Book here: http://bit.ly/1930sfashionandphotographs< br> Opening this Autumn, our next exhibition will explore the hard-edged chic styles of the 1930s. While the effects of the Great Depression sunk in, fashion adapted to new needs. With more utilitarian and conservative views in mind, styles drew inspiration from Art Deco, Moderne styles and Surrealism.
... As Parisian houses lost part of their dominant influence over fashion, the screen sirens of the Hollywood golden age became the new idols. It was the iconic styles of Marlene Dietrich, Jean Harlow and Ginger Rogers, which would leave an enduring impact in fashion.

I've visited this museum twice to see specific exhibitions. Have just seen the Anna Sui exhibition which I thought represented good value for money. The exhibition is well staged, making good use of the limited exhibition space available. The staff are friendly and photography is permitted. The gift shop has a good range of items though I was a bit disappointed that the vase I wanted is already sold out.

User

Amazing museum in the very interesting neighborhood. Wonderful size and fantastic exhibition The 1920's Jazz Age. The only criticism is strong smell of bacon coming to exhibition from Museum Cafe. I am vegetarian and it was so strong that it turned my stomach. Staff was very polite and I adore that I could take photos. Come back and recommend to friends. Thank you!

User

A beautifully presented exhibition with helpful notes for the viewer. I would have loved to have seen more accessories as part of the presentation. I particularly liked the timeline at the start commenting on the changing silhouettes of the period and the photography section at the end was a delightful bonus! Highly recommended.
