Faversham Gymnastics Club (Fcgac) Description

Faversham Gym Club is affiliated to the British Amateur Gymnastics Assocation, the South East region and Kent Amateur Gymnastics association. Our aim is to allow children and adults of all ages to make new friends and keep fit in a healthy, social atmosphere. There are recreational classes for children starting as soon as they can walk, and for adults there is a range of activities to improve fitness in a fun and social way, as well as air conditioning and machines for a workout. As a community based gym and charity we keep prices as low as is reasonably possible so that as many people as possible can benefit from our facilities. Through the hard work of our committee and supporters we now have, in the new centre, a full competition sized gymnastics area with sunken trampolines and new equipment so that, whatever their ability, our users can develop their skills and interests to the highest possible level. We provide qualified and experienced coaches for all classes, and children of all abilities from walking age upwards can participate in badge award schemes to give them a sense of achievement in their sessions at the gym. Many children use our classes just for fun and exercise, but for those with an interest and ability there is a competitive squad (shown in the picture with some of their medals! ).

To add to all the messages of support we received from so many people within the Community of Faversham for which we will be eternally grateful you’ll never know how much you have touched our hearts, we received the following from Darryl & Julie Trosh (Darryl was the founder of Faversham Gymnastics Club almost 40 years ago) “To Dear Alison & Dennis-A Remarkable Couple. Well done to you both for your years of loyalty and your foresight in developing such a lovely Gym Centre. Y...ou’ve really got the touch in organising the running of Centre. An example to even the top National Squad Clubs in raising an income to support all activities. We started in a very large gym with hardly any apparatus, then to a very small hall which eventually had lots of apparatus and now a huge gym with massive amounts of apparatus and separate rooms for other events and activities. What can anyone say in praise to you both? You have done what I couldn’t- Excellent! So much love, hugs and cheers from your biggest fans Julie & Darryl xxx. We count it a privilege to have Julie & Darryl as friends-Darryl was probably the best coach we have ever known.

It is with great sadness that Alison(the Founder of the Centre) and I have now resigned. It was due to Alison’s persistence, vision and a desire for a Centre for Faversham Gym Club that 15 years ago we were able to leave the small and dilapidated building in Solomon’s Lane. This had been the Gym’s home for more than 20 years and provided an amazing space for gymnastics but unfortunately the state of building meant we needed to look for a more permanent home. After a number o...f years of negotiating we able to secure Lottery funding together with other generous donations to create this AMAZING CENTRE. This was in no small part due to Alison’s insight hard work and determination and since the original build was completed 2003 in Whitstable Road we have been able to extend both at the front creating an area for additional seating, meetings and parties and a fitness room. We have also recently extended the Gymnastics Area. All with no external funding. Alison’s achievements were this year given the recognition they deserve with her being awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honour and also an award for services in Sport to the Community of Faversham presented in May by the Mayor Clr Trevor Abram. The 15 years spent at the Centre have been amazing and we are grateful for all the support from parents, staff and of course the amazing children. Two events stand out as highlights during our time at the Centre, the Olympic Torch Relay Team coming through Faversham in 2012 which we had the pleasure of hosting and the Club’s 35th Anniversary in 2014 with visits from Beth Tweddle and Daniel Purvis. Alison’s passion even as a little girl has been gymnastics and through the Club she has been able express and demonstrate that by seeing the joy on the children’s faces who are able to perform the simplest of disciplines. The last few months have been particularly painful and difficult for Alison due to unresolved issues with Directors/Trustees who had an entirely different agenda for the way forward to the one she was keen to pursue i. e completing the projects which needed to be carried out in order to make the facility complete. There is more than enough money in the bank for this to happen. It was our intention to retire in October 2019 by celebrating Faversham Gym Club 40th Anniversary which would have been a fitting end to our time at the Gym and a recognition of all the hard work from the staff and coaches particularly Carol Ratcliff and her team who over the last 15 years have become like family to us. The Club and this Facility has an excellent reputation so we have no doubt it will thrive and provide an amazing resource for this Community. With very wishes for future.
