November is Mouth Cancer Action Month! Throughout November, we aim to raise awareness to get more mouth cancers diagnosed at an early stage. In the UK, more than 7,800 people were diagnosed with mouth cancer last year and globally there are in excess of 300,000 new cases every year. It is the 4th most common cancer in males and the 12th most common in females. Over half of all cases of head and neck cancers are diagnosed in people aged 65 and over. Mouth cancer remains one o...f the most debilitating and disfiguring of all malignancies. The number of people being diagnosed with mouth cancer has grown by around a third in the last decade and remains one of very few cancers which are predicted to increase further in the coming years. Although there are risk factors heavily linked to the disease, mouth cancer can affect anyone – that’s why it’s so important that we all know what to look out for.

Is chewing gum good for your oral health? Sugarless gum is a good way to get saliva flowing in your mouth. Saliva helps wash away food particles from teeth and gums and helps prevent oral health problems such as tooth decay and dry mouth. Clinical studies have shown that chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes following meals can help prevent tooth decay.

How to prepare your child for a dental visit? - Even the first milk tooth can become decayed. Schedule a child's first dental visit before their 1st birthday - Pick the time of the day that your child is the least fussy - Before the visit read them a story about a friendly dentist or watch some cartoons with characters visiting a dentist eg. Peppa Pig - Practice at home: role play with your child so they can be the patient, the dentist and the parent... - Bring along the favourite toy or come with an older sibling to go first to set an example - Watch your words. DO NOT say things like "It is not going to hurt": if it is not an emergency visit but a scheduled adaptation one the dentist will only check the teeth and maybe clean them. Don't build an association of pain and the dentist from the first visit - If one of the parents is scared of coming to the dentist - maybe it would be better to come with the other parent - a child will easily pick up on parent's anxiety - After the visit it is time for a little treat or prize: not only will this help them feel better about the whole experience, but it will encourage them to link the dentist's office with positivity and fun

A porcelain veneer is a fantastic way of enhancing the look of your teeth. It can help cover unaesthetic fillings, fractures in the enamel and chipped edges. Veneers can improve both the colour and shape of your front teeth

Do you know what is a gum disease? Most adults in the UK have gum disease to some degree and most people experience it at least once. It is also a major cause of tooth loss in adults. All gum disease is caused by an accumulation of the plaque which contains lots of harmful bacteria. There are two main forms of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontal disease. GINGIVITIS is a medical term for the inflammation of the gums. This is when the gums around the teeth become dark red a...nd swollen. They often bleed during the everyday cleaning. Fortunately, this condition is completely reversible with good everyday oral care-careful brushing twice a day and using interdental cleaning appliances such as floss and interdental brushes as well as regular hygiene appointments at your dental office. Long-standing gingivitis can turn into PERIODONTAL DISEASE. There are a number of types of periodontal disease and they all affect the tissues supporting the teeth. As the disease gets worse, the bone anchoring the teeth in the jaw is lost, making the teeth loose. If this is not treated, the teeth may eventually fall out. The bone loss, although irreversible, can be stopped by an early stage with proper everyday hygiene and with the help of the dentist.
