Yesterday, the Queen visited The Royal Philatelic Society in London to open a new building on its 150th Anniversary. . Philately is the study of stamps and postal history. No doubt The Queen would have enjoyed seeing herself on so many stamps through the ages, including the 1st class stamp from 2012 featuring her portrait by Nicky Philipps, commissioned by Royal Mail Group, through @fineartcommissions to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee. #stamps #queen #philately #royalty рҹ“®вңүпёҸрҹ‘‘рҹ’Қ @ London, United Kingdom

//THE FRIDAY PHRASE// вҖңWhat portraiture is remains the governing conundrum. Many will assume it is enough to achieve a likeness. Someone paints somebody and it looks just like them, so thatвҖҷs good, no? Not really. ThatвҖҷs just a beginning. What counts is where you go beyond physical resemblance. That is what separates the decent portraits from the great ones. ThatвҖҷs where Gauguin comes in.вҖқ Waldemar Januszczak, Culture Magazine, 13 October 2019 . Happy 478th Birthday to DomГ©nikos TheotokГіpoulos, more widely known as El Greco (вҖңthe GreekвҖқ). Although born in Crete, he trained in Venice, under Titian, and it was here where his colourful and intense Mannerist style really developed, with his work being influenced by Tintoretto as well as the Byzantine art of his Grecian birthplace. To distinguish himself from other artists, El Greco invented new styles and interpretations - primarily his elongated figures, atmospheric lig...ht and strong use of colour, even though he found it the most unforgivable element of painting : вҖңI hold the imitation of colour to the greatest difficulty of artвҖқ. Despite this, his use of colour was a big influence on both Delacroix and Manet and his unusual compositions were explored, and even imitated by Picasso. - - Image one: El Greco, Portrait of Jorge Manuel Theotocopoulus, 1600-1605, Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes, Seville. The more the merrier... Portraits donвҖҷt have to be of just one sitter. Quite often our artists are asked to create works including two children and sometimes the whole family! Fine Art Commissions is now closed for our summer break, reopening on Monday 2 September. ItвҖҷs a good chance for our artists to do some painting en plein air, inspired by FAC favourite, John Singer Sargent (1856-1925). Wishing you all a wonderful bank holiday weekend and see you in the autumnрҹҢһрҹҺЁрҹҢӮ#enpleinair #summer #painting #art #portraiture
Image 1: An out-of-doors study, 1889, oil on canvas. Brooklyn Museum. - In the late 1880s, John Singer Sargent experimented with portra...it compositions whose informality and naturalness stood in sharp contrast to his commissioned studio portraits of elegant society types. Inspired in part by the Impressionist works of his friend Claude Monet, this portrait depicts another French artist friend, Paul Helleu, and his young wife, Alice, at Fladbury, in EnglandвҖҷs Cotswolds. Liberated from pictorial conventions, Sargent here featured the compositional asymmetry, natural light, and casual inattention of his вҖңsitters.вҖқ - - Image 2: Claude Monet painting by the edge of a wood, 1885, oil on canvas, Tate - Sargent first met Monet in 1876 and he admired the way that Monet worked out of doors, and imitated some of his subjects and methods in sketches such as this. This portrait has assumed an importance in the history of Impressionism because it shows the French artist doing what he advocated, painting directly from nature. It certainly had a personal significance for Sargent, who greatly admired Monet, as it commemorates their artistic relationship and is one of the few sketches Sargent didnвҖҷt give away. In fact it remained with Sargent all his life and was in his studio when he died, along with several works by Monet. - - Image 3: The sketchers, 1913, oil on canvas, The Met
Painted in Italy, this work depicts two of SargentвҖҷs sketching companions, Wilfrid de Glehn (1870вҖ“1951) and American painter Mary Foote (1872вҖ“1968) Here, Sargent expresses his view of what constitutes value in art: the world of nature brought to life on canvas through the artistвҖҷs observing eye.

On the 52nd anniversary of the death of Rene Magritte, Fine Art Commissions takes an in-depth look at possibly his most famous portrait, вҖҳThe son of manвҖҷ.
Painted in 1964, Magritte painted this work as a self-portrait. It consists of a man in an overcoat and a bowler hat standing in front of a short wall, beyond which is the sea and a cloudy sky. The man's face is largely obscured by a hovering green apple. However, the man's eyes can be seen peeking over the edge of the appl...e. Another subtle feature is that the man's left arm appears to bend backwards at the elbow.
Of the work, Magritte said вҖңAt least it hides the face partly. Well, so you have the apparent face, the apple, hiding the visible but hidden, the face of the person. It's something that happens constantly. Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us. This interest can take the form of a quite intense feeling, a sort of conflict, one might say, between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present.вҖқ
Allusions or copies of Magritte's most iconic piece have popped up in movies (Stranger Than Fiction, Bronson, The Thomas Crown Affair), books (Lev Grossman's The Magicians, Jimmy Liao's The Starry Starry Night), TV shows (The Simpsons, The Voice) and music videos (Michael Jackson's "Scream" and Yes's "Astral Traveller")
The green apple was an ongoing motif in Magritte's work. With the title вҖҳThe son of manвҖҷ referencing Jesus Christ, it is thought the apple might be a biblical reference in this case. However, green apples appear in a number of his other works. His use of it in the 1966 painting Le Jeu De Morre, owned by Paul McCartney, inspired the Beatles to name their record company "Apple Corps", and subsequently through this, Steve Jobs to name his company "Apple Computer". рҹҚҸрҹҺЁрҹҚҸрҹҺЁрҹҚҸрҹҺЁрҹҚҸрҹҺЁрҹҚҸрҹҺЁр ҹҚҸрҹҺЁ

Today marks the 156th anniversary of the death of EugГЁne Delacroix. His work was influenced by Rubens, Shakespeare, Northern Africa, Constable, music and Lord Byron, amongst others and, in turn, he inspired the symbolists and helped shape the style of the impressionists with his broad bush strokes. Although better known for works such as вҖңLiberty leading the peopleвҖқ (1830) (image 4) and вҖңThe Massacres of ChiosвҖқ (1824) (image 5), we at FAC, are huge fans of his portraits (image 1 - self portrait 1837; image 2 - Orphan girl at the cemetery 1823-4; image 3 - Seated nude, Mademoiselle Rose 1817-1824). #portrait #portraiture #delacroix #louvre #pioneer @ Fine Art Commissions

Broken Bodies Jamie Coreth oil on canvas 220.5 x 190.7cm
... This work depicts the artistвҖҷs friend Mark Jackson, a sculptor who was formerly a soldier in the Parachute Regiment and elite Pathfinder platoon. Mark sustained a severe injury, whilst parachuting, which smashed his hips and broke his legs. This accident ended his time in the army leading to his decision to concentrate on his career as a sculptor.
Of the painting, Coreth said вҖңJacko casts his shadow over an old clay figurative sculptures behind him, which was originally of an archer. It had since been cast and the original had its limbs removed. I noticed whilst there that the clay was cracked across the hips and across the heart, so I thought it apposite to cast his shadow over the leg that was most injured. In the shadow (cast by my canvas whilst working under spotlight) IвҖҷve suggested a sculpture of Cain and Abel (a story Jacko finds very moving as it represents the origins of conflict). The jawbone on the floor also references this, as Francesco Maffei painted the murder as it was being committed with the jawbone of a donkey.вҖқ
Now on view at 19 Ryder Street.

Happy 135th Birthday to Amedeo Modigliani seen here in his only self portrait in oil, which he painted one hundred years ago.
