Fridlington Farms Description
Fridlington Farms Ltd. is a family business which has farmed in the Sutton on the Forest area for 75 years and founded by J. L. Fridlington. The land, situated in the Vale of York has a light and sandy nature which gives a good platform for growing root vegetables. The farm consists of c. 1200 Hectares with a suitable 6 year rotation including potatoes, wheat, brassica, beet root and barley.
Potatoes are a key crop for the business. The potato crop is grown for processing with the farm supplying Walkers, McCain’s & QV Foods. The farm has an irrigation licence of 60million gallons. A small amount of the potato crop is marketed at harvest, but the majority is stored in our own state of the art storage facilities for marketing later in the season. Of the farm c. 240 Hectares are put down to grass, this is to feed a 2, 800 ewe flock which are on an Easycare system; this originates from New Zealand and Fridlington Farms has been using this system for nearly 10 years. The flock consists of a Highland /Primera cross.
The farm also has a 1, 000 sow pig unit situated on Eastmoor Farm. The unit has its own dedicated mill utilizing wheat and barley grown on the farm in the liquid feed system with nutritionists constantly monitoring raw material prices to make sure the unit is as efficient as it can be. All progeny are taken through to finishing weight and are slaughtered locally at Malton Bacon Factory (Karro Food group) minimizing food miles and stress.
