Did you know that the kind of toothpaste we use today is a fairly modern invention? It has only been available for the past hundred years. Before that, people used charcoal or ground chalk, ash, lemon juice, and honey-tobacco mixtures to clean their teeth!

Neanderthals attempted dentistry 130,000 years ago, believe scientists. Teeth found at a site in Krapina, Croatia, was examined by scientists and found to have a number of grooves, scratches and chips. This apparent evidence of attempts to use toothpick to deal with impacted tooth and misalignment of another one adds to impression Neanderthals were significantly more intelligent than previously thought. This however comes as no surprise because we already knew some Neanderthals were vegetarians who used natural forms of penicillin and aspirin as medicine as well.

Scientists discover an Alzheimer's drug can regrow teeth 'The simplicity of our approach makes it ideal as a clinical dental product for the natural treatment of large cavities' said Professor Paul Sharpe, lead author of a paper in the journal Scientific Reports. The scientists found the drug could "potentially" reduce the need for fillings providing a more natural solution for patients. In addition, as it's already been tested in clinical trials for Alzheimer's disease the dental treatment can relatively quickly be available at clinics.

This is the best time to brush your teeth! The standard advice from dentists has long been to brush our teeth twice a day, regularly floss and use mouthwash. Its part of the morning and evening routine, and some people even brush their teeth after every meal. But when is the best time to brush your teeth? According to Dr Richard Marques, one of the UK’s leading dentists “It is best to brush your teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and evening," he said. "You should wait at least 30 minutes after eating to brush the teeth, otherwise the acid can damage the tooth surface. Brushing before bed is really important, as otherwise the food can sit against the surface of the teeth and cause them to decay overnight."

Don’t forget to floss! Remember, you toothbrush reaches 60% of your teeth… you need to floss to reach the other 40%. After all, you wouldn’t wash only half of your face, or shampoo only half of your hair. ☺

Wow! According to Guinness World Records, the oldest person to ever grow a wisdom tooth was 94 years old! Well, as the saying goes… “With age, comes wisdom.” ☺

User

Cultural differences In English the ‘wisdom tooth’ was named after the time when they first come out which is later in life when you’re older and, hopefully, wiser. But in Korea, they are called ‘love tooth’, because around this time (late teens/early 20s) when a person first falls in love. The Japanese call them oyashirazu, or “unknown to parents,” because most people have moved away from home by the time their wisdom tooth appear.
