Our new season SUMMER IN THE CITY opens TOMORROW Monday 6th of August with Linklater’s DAZED AND CONFUSED.
“This coming-of-age film follows the mayhem of group of rowdy teenagers in Austin, Texas, celebrating the last day of high school in 1976. The graduating class heads for a popular pool hall and joins an impromptu keg party, however star football player Randall "Pink" Floyd has promised to focus on the championship game and abstain from partying. Meanwhile, the incoming freshmen try to avoid being hazed by the seniors, most notably the sadistic bully Fred O'Bannion.”

Music & Movies present a free screening of Terry Gilliam’s loved dystopian sci-fi BRAZIL, introduced by a live performance by James Boston and The Cold Spell. Friday august 10th, be there!
The Cold Spell are a piano based act fronted by James Boston on piano and vocals, featuring melodically rich songcraft in the vein of Ben Folds, Randy Newman, Father John Misty and Misty's Big Adventure. Jess Kay will be joining on Cajon, with guests Liz Hilder and Andrew Montague Cook. Exp...ect surreal puppetry based visuals as they premier their new video, and a song or two from their forthcoming EP 'All Aboard the Driverless Carriage', described as a 'conceptual train journey through a larger than life metropolis where everyone’s a little punch drunk
"Low-level bureaucrat Sam Lowry escapes the monotony of his day-to-day life through a recurring daydream of himself as a virtuous hero saving a beautiful damsel. Investigating a case that led to the wrongful arrest and eventual death of an innocent man instead of wanted terrorist Harry Tuttle, he meets the woman from his daydream, and in trying to help her gets caught in a web of mistaken identities, mindless bureaucracy and lies."

Our partnership with MUBI continues next Thursday August 9th with Nelson Carlo de Los Santos Arias' truly exceptional COCOTE.
A sensory portrait of the syncretic landscape in the Dominican Republic, Cocote takes ethical expectations and family feuds as its focus. The film follows evangelical Christian Alberto as he returns home to attend the funeral of his murdered father and finds that he is expected to take part in rituals that are in conflict with his beliefs. As he draws ...out the possibilities and complexities of a world in which multiple histories intertwine, director Nelson Carlo de Los Santos Arias opens space for what he terms a new kind of ‘mulatto’ filmmaking.
Playing on the border between fiction and non-fiction, the film resists one-dimensional identifications, juxtaposing ethnographic recordings with fictional scenes in which both professional and non-professional actors appear. Shifting between tones and textures, it offers an immersive and visceral engagement with violence of different kinds: the violence of loss, of family dispute, and ultimately, of history.
As always, all ticket holders will get a free month of hand-picked films to watch on curated online cinema, MUBI UK

Beaches have always been important to Agnès Varda, as she would travel to the seaside every Easter and summer throughout her childhood. During the Second World War, she was exiled in the coastal town of Sète, a period she recalls with fondness as a time of endless fun. Returning to Sète in the late 50s, she would use the locale and the local fishermen as the backdrop for her remarkable feature debut La Pointe Courte.
Varda returns once more to the beaches, using her early mem...ories of the coast as a springboard for the film’s meditation on her youth. Weaving photography, archive footage, scenes from her own films and present-day sequences, Varda takes us on a memorable voyage through her life, during which she confronts the joy of creation and the pain of personal loss, death and ageing.
It is a singular trip played out against the stirring backdrop of the post-war explosion of cultural expression in France. She knew everyone: the French New Wave set (she was married to Jacques Demy), the Black Panthers and even Jim Morrison, who would visit Agnès when he was in Paris.
Idiosyncratic, engaging and deeply moving, The Beaches of Agnès is the autobiography of a magnificent artist and a woman of vital curiosity.

Warm, winning, and gloriously alive, Sean Baker’s The Florida Project is a deeply moving and unforgettably poignant look at childhood. Set on a stretch of highway just outside the imagined utopia of Disney World, The Florida Project follows six-year-old Moonee (Brooklynn Prince in a stunn...ing breakout turn) and her rebellious mother Halley (Bria Vinai, another major discovery) over the course of a single summer. The two live week to week at “The Magic Castle,” a budget hotel managed by Bobby (a career-best Willem Dafoe), whose stern exterior hides a deep reservoir of kindness and compassion. Despite her harsh surroundings, the precocious and ebullient Moonee has no trouble making each day a celebration of life, her endless afternoons overflowing with mischief and grand adventure as she and her ragtag playmates—including Jancey, a new arrival to the area who quickly becomes Moon’s best friend—fearlessly explore the utterly unique world into which they've been thrown. Unbeknownst to Moonee, however, her delicate fantasy is supported by the toil and sacrifice of Halley, who is forced to explore increasingly dangerous possibilities in order to provide for her daughter.

Went to see all eyez on me last night with my partner (date night)! Didn't realise the showing was in studio 5 so was pleasantly surprised when we got in there! Lovely comfortable sofas with foot stools our own little table to put drinks on cusions and a blanket. It was so nice to be able to watch in such comfort and it really ended our date night away from the kids nicely!

User

This little cinema truly is remarkable. Cozy, friendly, fun and welcoming. Not only is it so pretty and quirky but it’s also nostalgic, lots of old movie posters that act as great conversation starters and ice breakers and a vintage vibe.

Little café downstairs and a cozy cocktail bar upstairs, The cocktail menu looks sounds like a dream, I had the Eton Mess tonight and will 1000% be trying them all.

The staff were ever so friendly and looked so happy to work there, one thing that really warmed my heart was seeing a theatre emptying and rather than everyone making a run for the door, they all hung about to talk about the movie and socialise! True cinematic appreciation once again revived!

Don’t get me wrong I have always loved going to the movies and try go whenever I can, but Genesis cannot be scratches by vue or odeon when it comes to comparison. My partner and I are seriously looking forward to grabbing ourselves a gold pass and visiting as much as we can!

User

This is a great cinema with comfortable sofas, wonderful, helpful and friendly staff including the security officer.

On my birthday we had a couple on drugs making a huge scene and escalated to thrashing the lobby. The staff gave everyone of us in that salon fresh tickets . That's classy!!

We will definitely return to this cinema!

There are certain places that are just right. For a cinema, Genesis is that. It's chique, smells of popcorn, is busy but oddly never crowded, and has a wonderful selection of films.

The whole cinema is lovely and I have noticed the change.Beautifully done

Love this cinema not been in eons as moved. Saw Revenge here tonight in studio 5, fab seats...sofas and armchairs well comfy. Nice staff. Cool little cafe for tea and coffee yay oat and soya milk and a bar for those who drink. Good prices. Great place

User

Easily the best cinema in East London. It’s very welcoming and the staff seem to be very happy in their roles!

The investment into the decor and screens is obvious, as this cinema has changed an awful lot over the last few years.

Also if you have an Idea Store card they offer 2 for 1 on tickets, which means only spending a fraction compared to ALL other cinemas!!

Stay Classy

Cool place to go studio 4 and 5 are great one as sofas and the other is a good size.

Watched the best film, booked seats easily, comfortable seating and friendly staff however the cinema screen 1 was freezing, all the children had to put their coats back on and as I drive and didn’t have a coat I was cold throughout despite asking the staff to turn the AC off - I would go again and have been a number of times but next time I will be prepared 🙏🏽

See 'Phantasm' 1979 tonight, with an an informative intro in screen 3 at Genesis Cinema, Mile end. I found out there are such a thing as 'Phans' of this film lol. and went to the hosted film chat afterwards in the mezzanine with some of the audience, met some nice people. (I think I was the only audience member who had ever seen it in a cinema before, and actually the same cinema back in the day in screen 1 when it was released). Followed by an unexpected free film 'Night of Living Dead' 1968 in the Paragon bar afterwards. Funny how perceptions change Phantasm was really scary when I watched it as a teenager, now the main baddy looked like David Walliams having a laugh. Was a good night for a film buff/cinephile like my self.

User

It's a great cinema with a good range of drinks and foods. Screen 5 is lovely with the comfy sofas. The staff are friendly and helpful.

The only thing I'd say is in screen 2 there isn't much of an incline so being short and someone sitting in front of me means I can't see the screen well.

User

It is good but in summer there should be some kind of cooling system

Overall its ok ....it is expensive compared to some other places iv been....but being so close i cant really complain only problem i do have is i have a disabled son who uses a wheelchair and i find it stupid there is a tiny lift for the bottom screens that to be honest is pretty usless as its slow and only substitutes for missing 3 steps anyway and we went to see captin underpants yestutday but once paid only found out their is no way of getting up other than having to carry my son up the stairs and again into the screen we were about to watch....some people may say well i had a choice whether to go to that screening but to be honest if they thought of a lift for the screens downstairs they should have really catered the same upstairs....little bit if of a let down for that but ok for a quick day out with kids

User

Shaby, smelling of dirt masked with bleach in screen 3, the projection was blurry and colours dull (since verified with others who went that this was so). The seats are angled on a gradient that anyone under 5'5" couldn't see because of the seat in front of them (seats on the righthand side of the aisle are angled away from the screen). I've been before because it can be cheaper there than many cinemas but not nicer.
