🇬🇧️🇩🇪️📽️German city brings 1950s cinema for British soldiers back to life
A cinema for British troops stationed in Germany during the Fifties is set to become a fully functioning picture house once again following the intervention of local residents in the German city of Oldenburg.
The Globe Theatre was one of 66 British military theatres built in Germany to give troops a place to watch English films and theatre.
... The building was abandoned in the early Nineties yet the original interior remains largely intact, right down to the cinema curtain. Last year, local residents fund-raised €275,000 to buy the 400-capacity Globe and secured listed status for the site earlier this year.
The Trust responsible for the building hopes to secure €1.5m to refurbish and restore the building and re-open the in 2020 as a cultural venue for cinema, theatre and more.
Dr John Goodyear of the University of Birmingham is researching the building's history and is looking to speak to people who remember the Globe as part of his research project.

🏛️🎨This year's London Design Biennale will bring established and emerging designers, architects, scientists, writers and artists from all over the world to Somerset House from 4 to 23 September 2018.
The German contribution "Pure Gold – Upcycling and its Emotional Touch" shows 30 contemporary designs by 28 international designers and design Studios, which recycle materials to create new high-quality objects.
The exhibition questions the primacy of function in classical modernism and looks instead at the emotional resonance of design.

🏰🏛️Tübingen is a quaint town near Stuttgart with its own Swabian traditions.
Known as one of the youngest cities in Germany (thanks to the many students, the average age has been roughly 40 years), Tübingen can boast sloping, charming rows of houses in medieval style as well as a highly regarded university.

🇩🇪️After introducing Bavaria’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the first part of our series, we now move to Germany’s northernmost Federal State, Schleswig-Holstein.
The two sites located here are a manifestation of the area’s historical importance as a trading hub and intercultural facilitator.
