Why are there so few contemporary European plays in translation produced on British stages? A conference (11 - 12 January) with German playwright and translator Ulrike Syha, and Melanie Bono, head of the culture department Northwestern Europe at the Goethe-Institut London, and other critics addresses the barriers to the import of European drama in the run-up to Brexit: https://bit.ly/2SKMJeO

As the House of Commons builds up to the Brexit deal vote, artist Jonas Lund is transforming The Photographers' Gallery into a fully functioning propaganda office. It’s mission? To devise an online campaign to reverse Brexit.
Following an open recruitment call, Lund hired twelve staff members who will work together over four days to generate a campaign to disrupt and expose current political debate. Employees include Alfie Brown, Guardian journalist, Alan Mozes, photographer ...who worked on the Hilary Clinton Presidential Campaign (2016) and Obama’s Re-election Campaign (2012), Miranda Stocker, a 19 year old youth advisor and Gina Power, a narrative production specialist.
We are supporting Jonas Lund's installation and performance titled "Operation Earnest Voice" which starts off with an office party this Thursday and concludes on Sunday at The Photographers' Gallery:

"Gut die Hälfte aller Tomb-Raider-Käufer war weiblich, die Branche nahm sie aber weiterhin als Randgruppe wahr. Erst in den 2000er-Jahren, als die Videospielumsätze schwächelten, wurden sie plötzlich zu einer begehrten Zielgruppe."
"More than half of the consumers who bought Tomb Raider were female, but the industry continued to see women as a marginal and inconsequential. It was not until game sales dropped precipitously in the 2000s that the gaming industry began to take its female players seriously as a target group."
Worthwhile article about female representation in the gaming industry since the 1970s:

taz reporter Daniel Schulz was friends with neo-Nazis – and had to run away from them. That paradox was par for the course in 1990s East Germany. And today? He describes life as a youth in the 90s after reunification in East Germany in a thought-provoking essay: https://www.goethe.de/prj/fre/en/denk/ess /21432147.html

What a start to 2019: New Year’s Eve fireworks in London celebrated the city’s “relationship with Europe”, said mayor of London Sadiq Khan. “By paying tribute to our close relationship with Europe as we welcome in the New Year, we will once again show the world that London will always be open.”
At the same time, we are slowly getting back from our Christmas break and looking forward to many inspiring projects for instance on Europe, arts and technologies, German language and much more at the Goethe-Institut London during what promises to be a very eventful 2019. Wishing you all a very happy New Year! https://ind.pn/2R2P8om

#recap from last weekend: Thank you to all participants of the Freiraum-UK SpeakEasy event in Carlisle for such a wonderful afternoon of poetry and art. In collaboration with AWAZCumbria and ArtBOX.gr| Creative Arts Management in Thessaloniki, the Freiraum SpeakEasy Afternoon was inspired by the questions: What is isolation? And what is freedom? European journalists and Johannes Ebert, Secretary General of the Goethe-Institut, attended several #Freiraum events in Carlisle and got the chance to meet different representatives of the city in Cumbria.
#Freiraum is a project of the Goethe-Institut in Europe in collaboration with 53 partners in culture, arts and civil society. About 40 European cities explore the question: What does freedom mean in present-day Europe? Photos: Goethe-Institut/Linda Bussey
