About Grays Of Westminster

The award-winning Grays of Westminster is a charming period shop, specialising exclusively in new and second-hand Nikon equipment.

Grays Of Westminster Description

Grays of Westminster, located in central London, a short distance from the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and Knightsbridge, was founded almost thirty years ago by Gray Levett with the idea of creating a world-class camera store, which would offer a service that was second to none. Grays of Westminster is to many photographers not just a camera-shop but an institution, one that has attracted customers from all over the world and from all walks of life. It evolved from a modest mail order company in the mid-1980s to its present, highly-respected position in the photographic industry with over 47, 000 customers world-wide, that have included the legendary film-director, Stanley Kubrick, David Suchet, best-known in his role as Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie’s famous sleuth, Lord Snowdon, world-famous National Geographic photographer Jim Brandenburg, Rod Stewart, and the late 1960s’ icon Terence Donovan.

Ladies & Gentlemen, the Nippon Kogaku Nikkor-N 5cm f/1.1 External & Internal Mount.
The very impressive 5cm f/1.1 Nikkor-N lens was announced in February 1956 and was exhibited in Tokyo. The 5cm f/1.1 was a very radical lens for its time, consisting of nine pieces of glass, some of which were very thin split elements and others containing rare earth components.
This stunning f/1.1 lens would reign supreme as the fastest lens made by the big four 35mm rangefinder camera maker...s, until the Canon 50mm f/0.95 lens was introduced in the early 1960s.
The 5cm f/1.1 Nikkor-N weighed 12.25 ounces (355gm) and it could be stopped down to f/22 with click stops. It used a 12-blade diaphragm and had an angle of view of 46 degrees and a focusing range of 3ft (0.9m) to infinity.
The first version of this lens had an internal mount the same as that found on their normal slower range of lenses, and is known as the ‘Internal Mount f/1.1’.
However, this lens was so heavy, that its weight could distort the camera mount and cause rangefinder error. This engineering problem was overcome in June 1959, when a 5cm f/1.1 lens was released with a redesigned barrel with an external mount, such as those found on the wide-angle and telephoto Nikkor lenses.
The optical formula is identical to the internal mount version and both lenses used the same 62mm accessories and only the rear cap differed. Factory records state that 1,046 internal mount lenses were made (835 in Nikon bayonet mount and 211 in Leica screw mount) and 1,547 of the external mount version.
The 5cm f/1.1 stands as one of the most impressive looking lenses made by Nikon and is certainly one of the most sought-after by collectors. ⠀ Shot with #Nikon #D850 & #nikkor 105mm f/1.4E AF-S lens⠀ ISO 64, 1/125s, f/4.5, tripod, 3x #SB-5000 and #iPhone torch for the lens flare.⠀

Ice Age . It's a cold day in Midwest America and also I hear in the UK. Chicago looks brutal. .
... Meanwhile, I am suffering from the flu after 3 days in Yellowstone. It is a stunningly raw and beautiful park in the winter, but it can also be extremely cold.
The steam from the thermal activity freezes on whatever it can - including the big bisons that gravitate there to keep warm.
I have waited for a very cold day like yesterday in Yellowstone for a long time, but looking at me this morning I certainly have paid the price. . This kind of photography may test one's appetite to work in extreme conditions, but it also tests our maths.
I have never taken a photograph of anything on an aperture of F18 before, but I did yesterday as I wanted as much depth of focus as possible.
My inclination was to be greedy and to try and have the bison’s nose in focus and also her eyes. So I sacrificed shutter speed and resolution and hoped for the best. It was impossible to check too much in the field, but when we returned home, I found one gem.
I hope she is feeling better than me today. She will be - they are as tough as hell. . #itsfiveoclocksomewhere #nikon #nikon_photography #nikonlife #nikonworld #nikon http://bit.ly/2ToOij1

What would that look like? ----------------------------------- We are so often sent fantastic images taken with Nikon equipment from all over the world and are delighted to be able to showcase them when we can through our newsletter and social media channels.
However, this year we are re-launching the Grays of Westminster Photo of the Month competition for 2019, back by popular demand.
... Every month we will announce a theme for you to interpret photographically as you wish.
You can submit your images, taken on Nikon equipment by email to info@graysofwestminster.co.uk or as direct messages on our Facebook page.
This month our theme comes from the great playwright himself, William Shakespeare. February is the month of love and with that in mind we have chosen a quote from Romeo & Juliet to inspire your picture taking:
''But, soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.'' - William Shakespeare
How would that look?
First place winner will receive a pair of Nikon Monarch 7 8x30 binoculars and a Nikon goodie bag.
Second and third place will receive a Nikon goodie bag each and all winners will be featured on our blog and social media.
Competition closes 28th February 2019.
Good luck!

Yesterday I ordered a used lens by Phone. Spoke to Becky and she told me the order would be shipped the same day. To my surprise it already arrived today. Since I live in the Netherlands this is excellent. Becky, thank you very much! But next time I will take the opportunity to visit the best store in the world!

User

Wonderful and friendly service by very knowledgeable staff. GoW is the only place I would buy Nikon from.

User

Visited their shop in London yesterday and was completely charmed by the quaintness of it and their total and absolute politeness and professionalism at all times. I have bought several items over the last few years from Grays - both new and pre-loved and their sales and service is second to none. Thankyou so much Tabitha Hardy. You rock!!!

User

Once again Grays of Westminster came through with flying colours!

I placed an order with Konstantin there for the new 100th Anniversary of Nikon book. He was more than helpful in making this an easy transaction given that the book had to make its way to Vancouver, British Columbia! My copy arrived here early the next Monday morning! Grays continues to impress with their second to none great service! Thank you Grays!

User

Ive used so many shops over the years and i have to say that Grays is the best .super fast amazing service never any issues unlike many others i have used this year .From now on i will only use Grays for all of my future purchases. They are also cheaper than every other shop I've tried.A real pleasure to deal with ..Very happy

User

I visited grays today (sat) for the first time and was overwhelmed with the shop its just nikon heaven the gentleman that served us made me and my little one very welcomed and i must say im very happy with my purchase and will defiantly visit this shop again when i come to london in future many thanks

User

I recently purchased a couple of 500mm lenses for my wife and I from Grays of Westminster and I can honestly say I have received the best customer service I have ever received anywhere for anything. All the staff I have spoken to have been extremely helpful, however Raffi who dealt with my sale has gone above and beyond in dealing with this transaction. The true gauge of a company is not how the deal with you when everything is fine but how they resolve any problems. I did have an unforeseen problem with one lens but the way that Raffi resolved it is something all retailers could learn from. As these were high value purchases for me I was a little nervous about where to purchase them from and chose Grays based on their reputation. I would have no hesitation making future purchases from Grays or recommending them to my friends.

User

I have to say that as a long time owner of Nikon gear it is fantastic to have that old fashioned personal service from people that care... advice is freely given without bias. Where will I go for my next Nikon purchase? Err did you have to ask... Grays of course!

User

I have recently bought a difficult to find brochure and a few accessories for my F2A and the service was excellent. I called in the shop to collect a camera case and flash coupler whilst on a London trip with work and Tabitha and Becky were so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I wish I had more time to look around, a veritable treasure trove for any Nikon user! Well worth a visit and I have to say the prices were competitive with anywhere else including well known auction sites. Their Nikon user magazine is excellent too.

If Gray Levett did lager it would be better than Carlsberg, lucky for us he does Nikon!

User

I arranged the purchased my D850 last year whilst overseas, to pick up on my visit to London. Correspondence was excellent. All went to plan. It was a pleasure to visit the shop. That meant that I could use my new camera for our family holiday and record those precious memories. My tax refund was processed smoothly too. Congratulations on running an organised and dependable operation.

User

I am F2AS as from today and I am so happy with Grays... this is my second analogue camera and a few prime fixed lenses I bought from this shop, I am definitely coming back for more... thank you Becky and guys...

User

Grays of Westminster is quite simply the finest camera shop in the world! I have purchased a number of cameras from Grays from the F100 to my current D750 and numerous lenses over the years. It doesn’t matter to them if you are purchasing a D5 or a lens cap every cutomer is treated exactly the same with professionalism and customer service so good it is legendary! Shopping at Greys of Westminster is an event in itself and a real treat and everyone who loves Nikon should shop there. I whole heartedly recommend Greys of Westminster.

User

Got my D7200 last Christmas and my 200-500 during the summer. Love going to london and making the trip to Pimlico to this fantastic place. There’s nothing they don’t have an answer or advice on!

User

From my first contact with Grays of Westminster on Facebook their Customer Service was first class.

I bought a new Nikon D750 body and a used Nikon 85mm 1.8 G lens. Delivery was held back until the day I had requested.

Having never bought a used product before I was a little apprehensive, however it was even better than described.

The lens was described as "Mint -", which they say is 98-99% of new quality. I can't tell any difference to new.

Before I purchased I had queried of the lens had a hood. Tabitha assured me that although it didn't she was sure they could find one. I had assumed this may have just been a third party replacement, but not it was the correct Nikon hood.

My only disappointment was that I couldn't visit to see the store myself. Hopefully the next time I am in London I will get the chance to pop in, even if only for a look around.

Keep up the good work!

User

For a novice to photography these type of establishments can often be intimidating to someone like me. From the time I entered the shop everyone was friendly & professional putting me at ease. I exchange a lens with no fuss or quibble and Tabitha also sold me a great bag for all my gear. Knowing I can park my motorbike right in front of the shop for future visits must mean I have to return when I need my next ‘toy’. When I returned home the wife asked me how much I’d spent ? I replied, Plenty, she said so long as you’re happy !!

Result I’d say

Thank you all.

User

Excellent, I went there yesterday Thurs 14th May for a lens I wanted, and got. The service was as usual great and the staff as ever a joy to deal with. Even with £21.00 rail fare the price still worked out cheaper than my local dealer in Stevenage. The awards won last year were more than justified and I will be voting for Grays again this year. For Nikon lovers there is no better place to shop on the planet!!

User

Excellent service when I bought my second hand lens a few months and excellent after sales care when there was an issue with one of them. Don't think I could have asked for more. Best independent I know of, and great people working there.

User

Bought Nikon 35mm F2D and it was cheaper than I expected and the service from staff exceptional.

I explained to them I had tried to purchase the very same lense from another known camera store in Central London but was disappointed that the item I tried that was displayed in their 'used' cabinet was already purchased online but they'd 'forgotten' to remove it from the shop floor. And they had no more in stock. Tut tut tut.

Enter Grays to the rescue! I also bought the 85mm 1.8G.

User

As from today I'm a happy owner of Nikon D810 with the help of ever so grateful sale man called Fanch.

Very friendly, informative & reassuring I have chosen correct camera for my needs.

For the little extra purchase of £155 less 20% discount I have extended warranty for another 5 years, got membership & further discounts in the shop. On top of that I got a subscription of the magazine & free Nikon D810 The expanded Guide (worth £15)

I feel like a winner - thanks ever so much couldn't recommend more enough :-)
