Great Ormond Street Hospital And Children'S Charity

About Great Ormond Street Hospital And Children'S Charity

Seriously ill children come to Great Ormond Street Hospital for life-saving treatment. Your support can help give them the chance for a better future.

Great Ormond Street Hospital And Children'S Charity Description

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is an international centre of excellence in child healthcare. Together with our research partner, the UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH), we form the UK’s only academic biomedical research centre specialising in paediatrics.

Since its formation in 1852, the hospital has been dedicated to children’s healthcare and to finding new and better ways to treat childhood illnesses.

Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity raises money to enable the hospital to provide world class care and to pioneer new treatments and cures for childhood illnesses.

With over 220, 000 patient visits every year, we need your support to help us give hope to our young patients and their families.

We’re thrilled to announce that we're fundraising for a brand-new Great Ormond Street Hospital Sight and Sound Centre, supported by Premier Inn and Restaurants.
We need to raise £25 million to fund the centre, which will be specially designed for patients with sight and hearing loss, like nine-year-old Josh, who comes to GOSH to visit the Ophthalmology and Audiology teams.
The careful layout of the building will ensure that children and young people won’t need to navigate co...nfusing hospital corridors during their visit, and it aims to create a sense of homeliness and the familiar to help put patients at ease.
Due to open in 2020, the Sight and Sound Centre will be the first dedicated medical facility of its kind for children with sight and hearing loss in the UK. Read more at http://bit.ly/2uVA1iF

It’s World Brain Day! Did you know: incredible research into brain imaging technology is currently being carried out at GOSH and the Institute of Child Health? Mr Sebastian Toescu, a neurosurgeon on GOSH Charity’s Surgeon Scientist PhD programme, is undertaking imaging research to pinpoint the exact causes of Cerebellar Mutism Syndrome (CMS).
CMS occurs in around a quarter of childhood brain tumour removal cases and is a complex disorder primarily causing inability to speak, problems with swallowing and can impact on cognitive function.
Mr Toescu, alongside his supervisors Professor Chris Clark and Mr Kristian Aquilina, are comparing children with and without CMS to try and identify steps to reduce the risk of a child developing the condition, and to predict which children might be affected.

“Both of my amazing children have Dyspraxia; I know what an emotional, lonely place it can be when you’re wondering about your child’s future. My fundraising walks are a nod to any parent whose child is facing a major health battle. I’ve also met customers on my post delivery route who have experiences of GOSH, who say their children are alive today because of the hospital, and it’s enough to keep me going each year. Taking on a challenge is an exhilarating, unforgettable experience!”
Nick is getting ready for the Wye Valley Challenge, his incredible seventh fundraising walk, to raise crucial funds to support GOSH. Inspired by Nick‚Äôs dedication? “With urgent cases it can be all hands-on deck to get results out the next day. It's stressful, but extremely rewarding, knowing I’m helping to care for patients. I love my job and feel proud to be a Biomedical Scientist.”
It's Biomedical Science Day and we’d like to shout out to all of the brilliant biomedical scientists working at GOSH! Thank you for all of your hard work and for the vital role you play in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions.

Our thanks and congratulations to the amazing Walk the Bryson Line team for completing their incredible 569-mile hike across the UK, raising more than £123,000 for a great range of causes including GOSH!
Starting at the top of Scotland, the team arrived to a heroes' welcome in sunny Bognor Regis this weekend, where local residents and author Bill Bryson came out to celebrate their achievement. Well done! 👣👏

Rubella, also known as German measles, is now very rare in the UK. But did you know, in 1967, Great Ormond Street Hospital – and Professor of Microbiology Alastair Dudgeon – led the first UK clinical trials of the rubella vaccine?

We need your help! GOSH Charity and The Chloe Mansfield Brighter Future Fund have the exciting opportunity of benefitting from match day collections during AFC Wimbledon’s 2018/19 season. But we need your help - voting closes at 5pm today: https://www.afcwimbledon.co.uk/…/j…/c harities-vote-deadline/
Chloe was born a healthy baby in 2012 but suffered a sudden and major respiratory collapse at 11 weeks old. After bravely battling her condition at GOSH, Chloe very sadly passed a...way on her nine-month birthday. Her parents, Thuy and William, who are local to Wimbledon, set up The Chloe Mansfield Brighter Future Fund to fundraise for GOSH in their daughter’s memory. Thuy said: “I can think of no better way to fulfil our vision for Chloe’s legacy than to partner with a local organisation and I would be honoured to create a partnership between AFC Wimbledon and The Chloe Mansfield Brighter Future Fund, to help me keep my promise to Chloe of creating an incredible legacy for her, and, importantly, so that her name and spirit can live on in her own community.”

GOSH patient Angel, who appears on tonight’s NHS70 special episode of The Last Leg, has two rare conditions that affect her bones. Soon she will have a prosthetic limb fitted which will help her get back on her feet and, she hopes, will one day help her achieve her dream of becoming a Paralympic tennis player! 🎾
The Last Leg’s Adam told Angel, if she “puts her mind to it, you can achieve it”, which is just what Angel’s mum and dad tell her every day.
Angel’s dad said: “Without the NHS, I dread to think were we would be. We could never repay them.”
