The International and Private Patients Service at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) provides world-class treatment to children from around the world suffering from rare, complex or multiple conditions

GOSH works collaboratively with local governments and hospitals in the Middle East to ensure all children and families have a smooth transition from initial referral in their home country, all the way to receiving treatment at GOSH in London. GOSH looks beyond a child's medical condition and seeks to care for all his or her cultural, psychological and social needs, as well as the needs of their family so they can feel at home during treatment.

GOSH has been a pioneer in paediatrics ever since it admitted its first patients in 1852, and continues to be trusted as a global leader in the treatment of sick children.

This #InternationalBrainTumourAwarenessWeek, meet Professor Darren Hargrave, Consultant Paediatric Oncologist from @GreatOrmondSt. Prof. Hargrave discusses his research into new brain tumour treatments and why it is so important.
“For a number of reasons, we need to find better and more effective treatments. Obviously, we would like as many children as possible to survive into adulthood. But in addition to that, we want to prevent damage to the brain which could give rise to... disability further down the line.
We’re looking into biologically-direct treatments. This means we are trying to determine why a tumour is growing and in turn use that information to find drugs which will specifically target the tumour cells as opposed to healthy local tissues. In this way, the treatment will be more selective at killing the actual tumour.”

Surgeons from GOSH and University College London Hospitals have carried out their first two operations on babies with spina bifida, while they’re still in the womb – a UK first!
“In spina bifida, the spinal canal does not close completely, leaving the spinal cord exposed from an early stage in pregnancy. This results in changes to the brain, as well as severe trauma-related injuries to the nerves on the lower half of the body,” said lead neurosurgeon Dominic Thompson of GOSH....
“Closure in the womb is an alternative to postnatal surgery, and improves short and medium-term outcomes. While neither intervention is fully curative, in fetal surgery, the defect is closed earlier which prevents damage to the spinal cord in the last third of pregnancy.”

On #WorldPaediatricBoneandJointDay, Mr Yaser Jabbar, Consultant Limb Reconstruction and Paediatric Orthopaedics at Great Ormond Street Hospital and Children's Charity and the Pyrrha Group, shares tips on how to keep your children's bones and joints healthy. “The best advice is to encourage children to eat a full and varied diet. Sunlight exposure is vital so Vitamin D can be made and converted in the body to help store calcium. We also need to encourage children and adults to keep active to keep their bodies strong for the future.” Find out more here: https://bit.ly/2PdJ5Mh #MyGOSHExpert

Professor Andreas Roposch, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital and Children's Charity is currently attending the 5th Middle East Pediatric Orthopaedic Society Annual Meeting in Dubai.
At the meeting, Prof. Roposch will be leading workshops for his international colleagues about a complex hip condition called Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH). “DDH is a condition where the hip joint does not properly form in babies and young children”, Prof. Roposch explains. “In DDH, the socket of the hip is too shallow and the femoral head is not held tightly in place. In severe cases, the femur lies entirely outside the socket, which is called dislocation.” Learn more about Prof. Roposch and DDH here: https://bit.ly/2pMHVsp

Clinical Psychologist Dr Maria Hadji-Michael, who appeared in our #GOSHxSuperhope video, discusses how Superhope has helped children at Great Ormond Street Hospital and Children's Charity this #worldmentalhealthday.
“Superhope is a unique programme that aims to help children through stressful or worrying times while in hospital. It encourages children to use their imagination and instils in children the perception of inner strength and resilience. This perception of strength and resilience can not only help children through the process of being in hospital, but also to increase their confidence and self-worth more broadly.”
