The Cinema closes 30 minutes after the final performance has started.

Greenwich Picturehouse Description

Considering its importance, it is surprising to learn that historically the borough of Greenwich was poorly served by cinemas. The Trafalgar Cinema opened on 26 December 1912. A small classical building, it served Greenwich until 30 September 1937 when it was joined by the far larger Granada, a typically lavish ‘30s super-cinema. These two flourished until the 1950s when all cinemas fell victim to the success of television and audiences fell dramatically. The Trafalgar, which had become an Odeon in 1945, was the first to close and it became a car showroom in 1960, finally being demolished in 1998.

The Granada closed in 1968 to become a bingo hall and was recently gutted for conversion into residential use. The neighbouring towns of Deptford, Lewisham and Woolwich all had far superior cinemas, some of which survive with listed status (Woolwich Granada – now a bingo hall, Woolwich Odeon – now a church) but most have sadly been demolished, including the spectacular art-deco Odeon at Deptford and the lavish Gaumont in Lewisham.

In something of a turn-around, Greenwich is now the best-served of these locations in terms of its cinemas.

In the multiplex building boom of the 1980s, when most developments were in out-of-town locations, Greenwich was unique in having a council-funded development in the town centre. The Greenwich Cinema was a modern purpose- built three-screen cinema designed by Howard and Unick. Opening in 1989, the cinema was an instant success and continued to do solid business until out-of-town multiplex competition opened nearby. The cinema closed in 2002.

City Screen, the UK’s leading independent cinema operator which runs some of London’s most cherished cinemas including the Ritzy, the Gate and the Clapham and Stratford Picturehouses, stepped in to rescue the building and transformed it into a five-screen venue, including a flexible basement screening area with its own lounge bar (which also hosts music and comedy events), a bar and two restaurants. The architects for the conversion were Panter Hudspith who have previously worked with City Screen to create award-winning cinemas.

Visited this cinema for the first time yesterday with a friend and loved it! We watched the new Pirates of the Caribbean, we where 2 of 5 people in there so it was nice. Seats where comfortable and even reclined! Used my meekat movie discount so even more worth it! Will be a returning customer! Staff where friendly too!

User

The food here is just lovely - had carrot cake, blueberry pancakes and breakfast cocktails- I felt upset about not being able to eat more of the menu but I had to go home.

User

Lovely venue and staff.

User

Love Greenwich Picture House - comfy seats and loads of leg room. Watched Dunkirk which was fab! Situated in the heart of Greenwich - its the perfect place to go watch a movie then chill out in a cafe and soak up the atmosphere - which is exactly what we did. Perfect!

User

I love the Greenwich Picturehouse! Great value compared to the bigger local places and the membership privalages are awesome. Great staff, parking is usually a doddle and free! The bar and cafe are a great touch also. Support independent cinema!

User

I love Greenwich Picturehouse, I’ve been using it since it opened. The different screening rooms all have comfy seats with plenty of legroom and recliner features. A wide choice of films with plenty of times to suit most folk. Lovely cafe serving great coffee and teas also excellent cakes and snacks.

User

Greenwich Picturehouse has everything to offer for the Cinema goers. It is comfortable and a pleasure to visit. You have a bar that sells coffee and if you don't need a coffee there's always a drink you can have and some eats.

User

Been coming here for years. The staff are friendly and very helpful. Its not over the top on prices. The seats are so comfy. The venue is kept clean and tidy. Screens and sound are fantastic.

User

Always a great selection of films, really friendly staff and great coffee and desserts at the café... it is invariably an enjoyable cinematic experience.

User

We love the Picturehouse! I went along with my toddler to see Red Turtle. The guy at the desk was megga friendly with both of us. The film was in the small room downstairs, we grabbed a sofa at the back and chilled in the cozy little room. Expensive though, even on member Mondays! I had to pay the same for the little guy...

User

Took my younglings to see Lego Batman. Great experience, comfy seats, lovely staff.

If I have one criticism is that even if I've prepaid & got my tickets, I still have to queue with ticket buyers if I want to get popcorn. It kind of defeats the objective of saving time by not queuing!

Saying that, I do still love this cinema and am considering buying membership. The kids think it's better than the Odeon.

User

Seats are comfortable and recline, clean and tidy. Toilets needed attention. Down side is the parking in Greenwich

User

One grouse yesterday was that we sat in darkness for 15 minutes for the Interval. Tricky for some elderly people wishing to get out of their seats to visit the lavatories, and I wanted to read my programme thoughtfully provided.

User

Lovely venue, comfy seats , good prices- just annoying some parents let their kids run riot during the Saturday morning films - failing to notice as they are on their phone... some of us actually go to watch the movie!

User

I’m a huge fan of Picturehouse cinemas and Greenwich was my first intro to this chain. The cinemas are comfortable, loads of leg room and most seats lean back. I hadn’t visited for a little while and was a little dismayed that they have got rid of their lovely scotch egg and pork pie offering in the upstairs bar. The cafe downstairs is tasty but always too busy, especially if you just want to take something easy into the cinema (which meant I ended up with a slice of cheesecake for lunch).

User

Comfortable chairs. Very clean plenty of legroom friendly and helpful staff. Nice cafe. I like the small Cinema. Great location 👍🏻

User

Normally love Greenwich picturehouse, it has the most comfortable seats. Slightly spoiled a recent visit to 'Solo - a star wars story' by a delay in dimming the lights until a few minutes into the film.

User

Cinema was fine, comfy seats, plenty of space. The drinks from the bar, however, were ludicrously priced. Single vodka with large diet coke (from tap) =£7.30. Clearly Dick Turpin is in charge

User

Served tickets at the counter only to be refused admission at the screen because an usher doubted my sons age. A complaint to management led to an uncaring, bog standard reply.

Good customer service pays their wages, they might need to reflect on that. Won't be going back.
