Challenge Completed - Well Done Phil!! 492miles & 18,500m elevation = a LOT of leg pain.
"Paul, our ever faithful guide in the van had promised us the last day was easy! When is nearly 100 miles in the Alps easy? Especially if you are with La Domestique Tours !
But, we rode more spectacular roads, climbed our last 6 Cols and there was quite a bit of downhill!
... A fantastic week! We could not have asked for better weather and the mountains were stunning. Rather higher than I banked on, but our memories will retain their beauty long after our legs have recovered.
Thanks for your support along the way. The generosity towards Send a Cow gave a reason for the pain and it was a real privilege to share some of the ride with you all."
Please do help us smash through the £24,000 target if you can, here on our Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/se ndacowoverthealps
P.S. "I'm back in the office on Monday!!"

Update from Phil's 5th Day in the saddle - 64.4miles and 11,177ft.
"This morning we climbed the Cime de La Bonnette - the highest road in Europe. From the hotel we rode upwards for 23 km, from 1200m above sea level to 2802m, at which height there is little but rock ! 2 hours and 5 minutes of pain, I unexpectedly found myself in tears at the top, it was that tough!
The reward was 20k downhill to lunch followed by another 20k downhill after lunch before, as our guide called it,... "a cheeky little climb up to our hotel" - none of us considered another 1000m climb either cheeky or little, but the views on the way up of Roubion were stunning! A short descent to Beuil, supper and football!"

Update from Phil's 4th day in the Alps - 73.1miles & 12,514ft.
"What a remarkable day, I could have taken 100’s of photos, but who wants to wait for me! Our day started with a climb to Genevre and the descent shown below to the medieval town of Briancon, with its incredible fortifications. From there we climbed the legendary Izoard, 20k uphill to a desolate wasteland.
The descent included an amazing and slightly daunting gorge! After a remarkable 20k descent, joy, up again t...o the Col de Vars, above surprisingly, the ski resort of Vars, another 16k climb through beautiful scenery brought us to the stunning descent back down to our hotel in Jausiers, 20k downhill, about the first 5 of which you can spot in a photo below!"

Update from Phil's Send a Cow challenge.
"Well, 3 days are complete, 3 days to go. The final day is rather easier, the only problem being my legs think they are finished already!
Today started with the absolutely stunning Col D’Iseran above Val D’Isere. The weather was perfect but the air was rather thin at 2764 metres. An 18 km descent led us to the foot of the Col Du Mont Cenis, Hannibal’s historic route Over the Alps! Another long descent into Susa, Italy, left us with 35...k mostly uphill to the hotel.
Tomorrow’s route was to begin with the climb to Sestriere, but mountain road closures will add 20km to our route and so the only option was to skip it, or climb it today. 3 of the 8 of us braved the extra 14km and over an hour uphill. The others did it for fun, it wasn’t fun. I did it for Send a Cow! Today we cycled 95.6 miles and 13,612ft."

Philip's in France and on his Bike - An Update from Sunday (Day 1)
"Fantastic weather, little wind, great company and truly amazing scenery. If it wasn’t for the mountain passes it would be a perfect holiday! Our route today was blocked by a major road building project, the resulting 30km diversion over 2 extra passes has made today’s ‘warm up‘ rather more challenging. In total we covered 86 miles and 13,197ft vertically, but we are all in good spirits and await our 8am start... tomorrow with interest. The Sponsorship I have received has been truly humbling, I am very grateful to everyone."

We had a brilliant evening last night with the Chideock & District Discussion Club.
The Club is made up of mainly farmers from East Devon, West Dorset & South Somerset. The club was started back in 1943 to encourage farmers to grow more food for the country during the war, and now has 140 members who still meet up regularly to have visits and talks on various subjects. We have a long history with many of the farmers who came, and we were delighted to have them visit. Interestingly, John Halse (Generation 3) moved our business to Honiton, and changed its name to Halse of Honiton, in the same year - 1943.
If any more groups want a tour, please don't hesitate to email phil@halse.co.uk or ring 01404 42121.
