Halton Village Millennium Green

About Halton Village Millennium Green

HVMG Trust and Action Group have been maintaining the field in Spark Lane, Halton Village since 1998. All the members are volunteers.

Halton Village Millennium Green Description

Adjacent to the historic Norton Arms pub which dates back to 1758, the Millennium Green was previously owned by Greenall’s Brewery and used as a football field.
In 1997, Greenall’s intended to sell the field with planning permission to build on it.
Local residents objected to this and formed a charitable Trust that ultimately acquired the land as a Millennium Green, thus preserving it as a green space for posterity. It is one of the few remaining Millennium Greens in the UK as many were sold over the years due to lack of local interest /support.
In 2012, as part of the Diamond Jublilee and Olympics celebrations, we became a "Queen Elizabeth 11 Field" giving us further protection as a green space, and a wonderful plaque!
Local people use the Green for dog walking, football and general recreation. It is open to the public 24 /7 all year around.

DOG OF THE MONTH - APRIL We have a very special Dog of the Month to cheer us all up in these dark days! Lord Nelson is a 2 year old French Bulldog. He loves his daily walks to the Green and playing with his pals Max and Milo. He has an endless appetite and especially loves his Grandad’s Sunday dinners and sausages! He is very much a people boy, he often stops as he walks down the road and waits for people to adoringly stroke him. Interestingly, he could have been a cat as he can jump incredibly high. He is also mostly nocturnal as he loves to sleep all day and he usually comes alive at night!! Lord Nelson is also quite partial to jumping in the bath every now and again: whether it be empty or full! He’s a very fun-loving little character who is living his best life!

Some of our local schools have taken part in an art competition for a chance to win art materials for the school and take part in an exhibition. Have a look at the entries and vote for your favourite 😀 http://schools.dot-art.com/schools

Nice to see people safe distancing and enjoying the Green for their one outing a day. Don't forget to clap for our NHS at 8 o'clock on Thursday. Stay safe everyone x.

Life goes on on the Green….. Big thanks to Iggy and Rita for all the mowing yesterday its looking lovely. The eagle-eyed amongst you might have spotted the bags of top soil have disappeared. Huge thanks to Ron (Jerrison) who single-handedly completed the filling of the beds. Sadly, the School’s Garden Project has had to be delayed but we have ordered some Wildflower Seeds which we will sprinkle onto the beds for a splash of colour. We have had to take the decision to can...cel the VE Day Street Party and Midsummer on the Millennium Big Picnic. As things stand we are hoping to go ahead with the Free Family Fun Day but watch this space…. One final plea – Foodbanks are suffering dreadfully because of unnecessary panic buying – if you can, when you are shopping, please donate something and leave either in the trollies in the supermarkets or at the premises - 53a, Operations Centre, Russell Rd, Runcorn WA7 4BH. Everyone was so very generous at Christmas we know we can rely on our Green community to help….

Please continue to use our lovely Green space, but try to stay safe. As you know, the Millennium is not owned or maintained by Halton Borough Council, it’s owned and maintained by the Trust, a small Charity consisting of local people that are all volunteers. We want everyone to be able to continue to enjoy this lovely Green space so here is our safety announcement in view of Coronavirus\Corvid 19. Please read it, it’s based on Government advice. Watch this space to see our future plans to support our local community during this difficult time 🙂

Huge thanks to Glen at Walton Turf for very kindly donating four tons of top soil for our School’s Garden Project. The soil was delivered on Saturday and once it is in the beds the School’s Garden Project can start – Coronavirus permitting…….

Who could be better to welcome Spring on the Green for our Dog of the Month than lovely Penny. Penny is a wire haired Hungarian Vizsla. The breed is a loyal companion,, natural pointer and stalker of birds but thankfully they are never in any real danger with Penny! She has just celebrated her 3rd birthday. She loves to walk for miles and miles and to chase balls on the Green. She totally rules the roost and has the whole family wrapped around her (not so little) paw! Really gorgeous girl.

Thanks so much to Jason, Iggy, Dave and Dave who were hard at work this morning. They were able to fill the beds for the School's Garden Project with top soil now that Storms Ciara and Dennis have abated..... Good job!

Spring is coming.... honestly! Snowdrops, daffs and buds are gradually appearing on the Green. Big thanks to CCC for donating 8 tons of top soil for our School's Garden Project.

DOG OF THE MONTH - FEBRUARY Much loved Ozzy is another member of our ever-growing number of Spanish rescue dogs. He is part-Podenco (a breed of hunting dog that hails from the Canary Islands originally). He is 15 months old, full of fun but rather naughty - he loves to chew and so far has worked his way through the sofa and a TV remote! However he has been forgiven because he is so lovable.... He is a most handsome rascal.....

Some photos from our Wassail on a very cold and misty Sunday morning. We were warmed by hot soup, mulled cider and toasted marshmallows. We toasted the trees with cider, here’s to a good harvest in 2020! Look out for more free events coming soon 😀
