The return of our May Fayre, inspired by the infamous annual festival that took place around Brook Street in the 18th century, and gave Mayfair it’s name. Expect a fascinating evening of Baroque music, drama and intrigue to celebrate the wilder side of Mayfair’s past.
On the first floor, in Handel’s Music Room, Baroque mezzo-soprano Emma Stannard, accompanied on our 18th century harpsichord, will perform music celebrating the coming of Spring using some of Handel’s greatest p...ieces.
On the second floor, in the great composer’s bedroom – and the room where Handel died in 1759 – a variety of Georgian characters from Handel’s London will be brought to life for visitors to interact with.
The third floor, where Jimi Hendrix lived in 1969, will be taken over by Art Macabre's Death Drawing Salons. Art Macabre will present a curious vision of the strange, surreal elements of British folk traditions and May Day parade rituals for you to sketch. Create colourful illustrations depicting our weird and wonderfully macabre May Day moments. A riot of colour, pattern and your chance to get creative with “death drawing” from observation and imagination! Materials sponsored by GreatArt.
Finally, throughout the night – and throughout the different rooms of the house – critically-acclaimed folk trio Said The Maiden will be performing impromptu sets of traditional and original songs.
All of this, plus a few surprises, face-painting, and drinks at our pop-up bar. Don’t miss out on the rare opportunity to visit the whole house after hours!
Limited earlybird tickets £15 - https://handelhendrix.org/whats-on/events /the-may-fayre/

Handel House is proud to welcome renowned conductor and author Jane Glover to St George’s Hanover Square to discuss her latest book Handel In London: The Making of a Genius.
Handel in London - published late last year by Pan Macmillan and recently chosen as BBC Radio 4's Book of the Week - tells the story of a young German composer who in 1712, followed his princely master to London and would remain there for the rest of his life. That master would become King George II and t...he composer was George Frideric Handel.
Jane Glover, who has conducted Handel’s work in opera houses and concert halls throughout the world, draws on her profound understanding of music and musicians to tell Handel’s story. It is a story of music-making and musicianship, of practices and practicalities, but also of courts and cabals, of theatrical rivalries and of eighteenth-century society. It is also, of course, the story of some of the most remarkable music ever written, music that has been played and sung, and loved, in this country – and throughout the world – for three hundred years.
The event will begin with a short music recital courtesy of Handel House Talent tenor Richard Robbins and will be followed by a book signing session and a glass of wine.
Venue: St George’s Church, Hanover Square, Mayfair, London W1S 1FX Tickets: £15 https://handelhendrix.org/…/ev…/hande l-london-making-genius/

Handel House Talent mezzo-soprano Emma Stannard will explore themes of infatuation and obsession, centred around Handel’s cantata La Lucrezia. Tracing the legend of Lucretia, the cantata delves into the inner turmoil of the heroine preceding her suicide.

The question of whether tears or song be the more potent weapon in love was a topic of great interest to composer Barbara Strozzi in 17th century Venice. Hannah Ely (soprano) and Toby Carr (theorbo) perform works by Strozzi alongside other Italian and English works.

50 years ago, on 18 February 1969, Jimi Hendrix headlined the Royal Albert Hall then came back to his flat here on Brook Street for a small gathering, where this film of him playing Hound Dog was recorded.

User

50 years ago today, on Valentine's Day 1969, Jimi Hendrix was awarded Top Musician in the World by Maurice Gibb of the BeeGees at the Disc and Music Echo awards (beating other nominee Eric Clapton).

Worth every penny, the details in hendrix room is incredibly good. The shop is really good too. I loved the costume room and tons of fun with my friends.

User

Wonderful place! I am so glad I stumbled upon it as I was watching a documentary about Jimi Hendrix. All the people working there are extremely nice and will take time if you have some questions. As a Hendrix fan it is without a doubt a place worth visiting! I will come back for sure:)

User

Wonderful and enchanting visit, thanks to the knowledgable and enthusiastic staff, and the inviting environment of the museum house itself.

User

Went on Bank Holiday Monday and absolutely loved it. Always knew that Hendrix have lived virtually "next door" to where Handel lived, but to see how this amazing musical coincidence has been melted together .....just amazing. Saw the list of Hendrix concerts and saw the dates where he played Worcester, my home city. It was great to take a picture of it to show my brother and his wife who both went to see Jimi in April 1967.

User

Wel worth a visit. To stand in the room where Handel wrote the Messiah was pretty cool. And then to walk round the flat where Jimi did his thing was a trip and a half! Go see it!

User

Walking though the flat was an incredible inspiration. Finally I am experienced. Now if I could just find electric lady land!

User

There's not enough stars to express how much I love this place! Thank you for making it possible. The whole place still kept its original feel, with the vintage instruments, photos and furniture. Lovely to hear the harpsichord being played. It's lovely. Perfect arrangement of the new Hendrix rooms, very cleverly done, with loads of background about what his life was like at the time he lived there, what he used to do, where he used to go, who used to come by. Fantastic way of arranging his record collection with a background of what he played most, what he liked, anecdotes, very well displayed. It's really good fun to have the room "dress like Jimi" and take photos! that's a very cool idea indeed.

Lovely staff, very cool! I'm so happy.

One of my favourite hidden gems in Central London. A museum in a beautiful Georgian house tucked away in a mews court near Bond Street. The new Hendrix exhibition is great and the Breadcrumbs game that is available for a museum hunt makes the experience really enjoyable and reveals some of the museum's secrets. Regular recitals take place and are well worth checking out. Lots for families to do too

User

Magical place. So cool to see where George & Jimi lived, all though 300 years apart. Was so lucky to be there as two young guys were doing a rehearsal on a 300 year old harpsichord and cello. Playing beautiful Handel composition.

Oh and it was so cool to see that both Handel and Hendix had the same taste in wardrobe.

Highly recommended

User

Just an amazing place to be, was delighted of taking pictures for their second anniversary was a fun night loved the atmosphere, music lighting and people

User

I will come back ! The live session was pretty awesome, if I knew It I would of taken my guitar, and jam with some great musicians ! If you are a fan or appreciated the one and only Legend Jimmy Hendrix this place it's a must on your list of things to view in London

User

I shall give you 10* for everything you do in order to keep the memory, style, legacy & music of #JimiHendrix alive. To stand in the room where Handel wrote Messiah and to sit in Jimi's chair & have photos were these geniuses wrote history ...I could never imagined since teenager when I first took piano&guitar lessons. I recommend it to everyone. Thank you for everything and I'll be back soon! #Musiciseverything

User

I have opera lessons so it was fabulous to dress up and sing one of Handel’s arias in his house.

User

I had a fantastic time here, friendly staff & a wonderful atmosphere about this place... will definitely be coming back! If you're in central London, be sure to come and enjoy this beautiful little museum!

User

Five stars only because you can't give 500!

My son and I thoroughly enjoyed the museum. I'm a Hendrix fan, and that said, spent as much time in the Handel side because of the friendly and knowledgeable staff, who went out of their way to engage, inform and educate.

Musicians were practicing for a concert that evening, and I was fortunate to be able to sit and enjoy. Later, a singer was warming up. Hearing harpsichord and strings, as well as an opera singer resonate through a home with so much musical history was otherworldly.

The Hendrix flat was as well-done and true to the period as the Handel side. Bravo for having Kathy Etchingham consult on Jimi's room. The intern there was very knowledgeable and informative.

The displays of the Epiphone acoustic guitar and Roger Mayer's Octavia, especially the description of Jimi's use of effects (and why) were outstanding.

My visit was the fulfillment of a longstanding dream and a perfect bookend to my visit earlier that week to the Tate Modern to see the Soul Of A Nation exhibit. Thank you for committing the time, effort, and resources to preserving this fragile piece of African American history, as well as tying Jimi's legacy with Handel. Looking at stairs both of them tread fires the imagination.

Again, thank you.

Amazing place. Very relaxing and wonderful to read and learn more about these two extraordinary talents who lived at the same place but two centuries apart.

User

A hidden gem in central London that provides a glimpse into the life of Handel. Amazing to see his harpsichords and where he slept and took his meals. I was very inspired. Clever to now include an exhibit on Jimmy Hendrix, another string musician with ties to London, to widen the appeal.

User

Big fan of both so it was really interesting to see the place(s) they lived. The staff are really friendly and knowledgeable. I will keep an eye out for future events. The only thing I would say is that there's loads more to Handel than the Messiah, so it would be nice to have more about his life and work - and more music! - on display.
