Hi
My name is Andrea Szalay and this story began many years ago, when I was aged 13. My teenage years loomed ahead of me and I knew I needed to discover my passion. . .
I joined Chesham Youth Theatre group and realised that my dreams had come true. I could finally spend my time with like-minded friends, reading scripts and learning lines, rehearsing, building up my confidence and finally, after weeks of rehearsals (blood, sweat and tears sometimes! ) putting on a show for family, friends and the general public. It was exciting and fun, learning to co-operate with others, sharing work as a team and working towards a common goal. It gave me a sense of commitment, of being part of a local community as well as the excitement and thrill of performance. I remained with the Youth Theatre group until the age of 19, giving me a focus and developing my dramatic skills.
That passion and love of theatre led me to study Theatre and Costume Design at Middlesex University, which, in turn, led me into primary teaching. As well as full time teaching, I acted as Creative and Expressive Arts Manager in a local primary school, where I directed and produced bi-annual large scale drama productions for year 5 and 6 students.
Now, after fourteen years of teaching drama at primary school, I am so excited to finally be able to run my own local Youth Theatre group here in Highbury. My assistant will be Annie Burns, a qualified teaching assistant and first aider, with many years experience working in primary schools. We are both really looking forward to working with young people from the Highbury area, helping to build their confidence, their public speaking skills as well as having fun. Hope to see you all soon!
