During the Korean War, HMS Belfast’s accuracy when it came to bombarding targets with her powerful guns was noted. One American admiral praised her as ‘that straight-shooting ship’.
But for the ship’s company, trying to sleep while the guns were firing could be quite a challenge, as veteran Ron Yardley explains in this clip. His hammock was located just a few decks below the 6-inch guns….

Summer sun a bit too much? Spare a thought for the men of HMS Belfast who had to work very hard in the sun when taking on supplies while at sea during their final Far East Commission.

To mark the christening of Prince Louis today, we’re sharing a photograph from our collection of the christening of Terence Stafford on HMS Kittiwake in April 1945.
His father was the commanding officer and the ship’s bell was used as a font! This was a tradition that happened on other ships, including HMS Belfast – if you look inside the ship’s bell on the quarterdeck, you will see the names of some of the children who were christened in it! © IWM (A 28267)

User

Visited yesterday as a birthday treat for my other half. Such a cool day spent about two hours. Took me back to my childhood loved it.

User

The fee seems quite high on first sight, however the tour and facilities are really good value. There is lots to see and it gives a good insight to life on board a warship, in battle or with peace keeping activities.

Recently the HMS Belfast has had some upgrading. There are now signs that lead you around the ship. Toilets are clearly indicated, a map is available as well as a hand held auditory commentary that my 4 yr old grandson had no difficulty working.

The whole experience was very real because you were treading in the footsteps of those who lived it.

After a disastrous experience last year, I am delighted that the IWM have implemented some simple but effective signs that lead you around the ship so that you can see it all.

My grandson referred the HMS Belfast as ‘The Maze Ship’ because that is exactly what it was like without signs or a map. Well done for providing an excellent experience with the upgrade. We love it now.

User

Really interesting! My 10 and 6 years olds really enjoyed it. We even got to chat to a veteran who’d served on the ship. Fantastic trip out

User

My first encounter with HMS Belfast was when as a boy I built the Airfix scale model of the ship. I first visited this magnificent warship in 1986 and have been back on many occasions since. In my view, HMS Belfast is one of London’s main tourist attractions - everybody who’s interested in maritime war history should go for a visit.

User

Met up with my Grandson yesterday so decided to go onto HMS Belfast, have been on there a few times with my other Grandchildren but still good to see again.

User

Me and my partner loved the concept of being able to explore the HMS Belfast freely and however you pleased! We learned so much through our tour and was able to understand how life would be like living at sea. Would definitely recommend anyone to pay their money to explore the HMS Belfast as it is worth every penny!

User

I went there yesterday with 3 others brilliant experience we all enjoyed it spent most of the afternoon looking around..liked the way it lead you round.. We were also fortunate with good weather

User

I visited yesterday with my husband and two boys aged 8 and 11. I must say we all had a great experience on board. We spent just over an hour and a half exploring and in all fairness could have spent longer, however plans didn't allow. Really impressed by the access on all decks and just how much there was to explore. The boys loved having the little audio guides which they could use independently - little tip get the child friendly versions. This enables you all to listen to the same content. You are free to roam around the ship at your own pace and spend as long as you like on board. I was a little concerned that the boys might get a bit sick walking around the ship but they thought it was a real adventure. Really great value for money too.

User

Great place and friendly helpful staff, love the way you can walk around yourself as you choose

User

Fantastic. I’ve wanted to visit for a while. Been years since I was in London so I took my opportunity. Five of us visited and we all loved it. A real chance to get on board a ship that helped secure our liberty and freedom. Just fantastic that you are able to move around on board her so freely, very little is not accessible. The information and veterans memories on the handsets add well to the experience. This is a real museum that hopefully will be here for us all for a long time to come.

User

Fantastic for me and my two sons. Visit London with little boys = visit HMS Belfast. :-)

Brilliant - spent 2.5 hours there and so interesting. Just need to be careful going up the ladders as I hit my head coming up the steps at B turret 😫
