About Hmv 363 Oxford Street

the home of entertainment since 1921

Hmv 363 Oxford Street Description

HMV Retail Ltd, formerly HMV Group plc, is a British entertainment retailing company operating in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange and was a constituent of the FTSE Fledgling Index. The first HMV branded store was opened by the Gramophone Company on Oxford Street in 1921, and the HMV name was also used for television and radio sets manufactured from the 1930s onwards. The retail side of the business began to expand in the 1960s, and in 1998 was divested from EMI, the successor to the Gramophone Company, to form what would become HMV Group. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) prior to administration was Trevor Moore; he replaced Simon Fox on 3 September 2012.

HMV stands for His Master's Voice, the title of a painting by Francis Barraud of the dog Nipper listening to a cylinder phonograph, which was bought by the Gramophone Company in 1899. For advertising purposes this was changed to a wind-up gramophone, and eventually used simply as a silhouette.

Acquisitions by the HMV Group have included Waterstone's in 1998 from W H Smith[6] (sold in 2011), the music retailer Fopp in August 2007, and selected Zavvi retail outlets in February 2009. The group branched out into live music venue management in 2009 by purchasing MAMA Group, though sold the group in December 2012.

On 15 January 2013, HMV Group entered administration. Deloitte were appointed to deal with the administration of the company. On 16 January 2013, HMV Ireland declared receivership, and all Irish stores were closed. A week later, on 22 January 2013, it was reported that Hilco UK would buy the debt of HMV, a step towards potentially taking control of the company. The sale of HMV's Hong Kong and Singapore business to private equity firm Aid Partners was completed on 28 February 2013. On 5 April 2013, HMV was bought out of administration by Hilco UK for an estimated £50 million.

Took daughter and friend along for All Time Low signing. Staff were outstanding and made every effort to make sure things ran smoothly. Lots of fun and good humour. The girls remembered the security man from a previous event and commented that he was lovely! Definitely worth a visit and check out their events too!

User

The shop was bigger than I thought. The workmen/ladies were very helpful especially after we asked to have our photos taken. When we went up for the Sir cliff cd signing and waited upstairs the album was being played so we sang along as well as the security men. Was a great experience n can't wait to go back to shop there again x

User

The free live gigs and signing are brilliant. So good to still be able to hear live music in a small space get a CD sign and get a photo with your idol. Keep it up.

User

The Ghost Prequelle signing today was awesome. Your staff ran it so well, it was an all round top notch experience. Can't wait to see the pictures. Thank-you

User

Love seeing gigs and album signings here, staff are lovely and am happy to have this hmv not far from me. Look forward to going back soon.

User

I've been so many times in this shop during the years I spent in London. Such a wonderful memory for me ! I love you !

User

I went to see Tom Chaplin on crutches and in a boot, the staff apologized that the lift was out of use and was really polite, I asked if I could have a sit as I can't stand up for a long time and was allowed to have a seat at the side of the room which I was happy with. There was a dad and her daughter and also a mum and her 2 boys who was also allowed to sit at the side of the room too.

User

I went here and asked a staff member the simple question of: "if 10 years into the future they allow transsexuals to get pregnant, how can I get pregnant with twins, abort one of them and tell the other all about it 19 years later?" he had no answer and said they sold nothing on the subject.

I'd still recommend this place. Idk

User

I miss all the HMVs. Hope this one survives forever for the sake of good music.

User

I love HMV Oxford Street. I remember visiting in 1973 with my dad when he bought me Bowles latest: Aladdin Sane. I can't walk past this shop when in London. Fabulous staff and one of the best selections of well priced vinyl in the country.

You can regularly pick up vinyl for £9.99 and they always have every box set that has been released.

User

User

User

Was lucky to be given tickets to both Sophie Ellis bexter a couple of years ago great performance very intimate got autographs also photo taken with her staff on the ball as well, then Kylie last night massive amount of security was great meeting her autograph but no proper picture taken with her don't know if this was down to her management or security team they could take a leaf out of Sophie and her team not knocking Kylie just the team

User

Took my daughter to an All Time Low signing. It was very well organised and the staff were all very friendly. It's great to have such a store where you can meet the bands you love. Plus we love browsing in the store and spend many an hour trying to decide what to buy😊

User

Brilliant opportunity for my daughter to meet Dan TDM on Sunday. Good email contact and simple collection of DVD. Thank you! 😀

User

Amazing place !!! Here I found many albuns I was looking for and some of them are rare today. I'll be back everytime I return to London.

User

attended JMJ signing last evening - a few unhappy bunnies saying not everyone knew it was for ticket holders. It was a hijacking to make sure you bought the CD. vinyl - in whatever form - at that shop. Security was fine ... sense of humour failure with some of them - if it is that stressy, hold it in a more secure area where people are more controlled. Security nigh on had apoplexy over us not being able to bunch up - that was people people were buying from the area. Not handled as well as the Grumpy Cat event ;-) but still worth the time

User

I have commented on Nuala's review for Omelda Mau yesterday ....

Deffo prob with a/c during Imelda's performance... we felt overwhelmed with heat and claustrophobic.... the a/c was turned on after for the signing but we couldn't wait as we were at end of the queue. Fabulous performance and CD is brilliant :-)

User

Cramped store, used to be much bigger before Foot Locker got hold of the building and ripped out the magnificent spiral staircase. There were 5 sales floors before, now it's just 3. Miss the massive store that used to be at the other end of Oxford Street, that's now Sports Direct.
