Q&A with yoga instructor @naijaboybending . We’ll be launching a series of Q&As with our group fitness team answering everything and anything health & fitness. . We are committed to delivering classes with a purpose, led by passionate instructors. Samuel is a shining example of taking pride in perfecting his craft.
Question: ... How does yoga improve athletic performance?
Answer: I would answer this question firstly with an analogy - If you have 4 defenders around you whilst you are trying to score a goal the chances of you 'performing' that skill of shooting is less than if you had no defenders around you and more space to shoot.
This is what practising yoga gives you. Space. More room within your body (and mind), why continue to use 60% range of motion when you can use 80-90%. When you practice yoga asana (physical) the postures are designed to, lengthen, stretch, strengthen and create proprioception in almost every part of your body - there is not any other 'exercise' regime out there that does this as well as yoga. Depending on your sport or exercise programme it is true that being too flexible might not aid you - basketball players would require a certain amount of elasticity in their hamstrings but too much and they may not have the same 'spring' from the floor. However, if they never balance this with some exercise that lengthens the muscles, when they do retire then they will find restricted movement in certain areas. When your muscles are worked in the same rhythmic movement over and over again, your connective tissue (the layers under the belly of the muscle) will shorten to the minimum size to be able to accommodate your movements. Then if we try later after years of doing the same movements in our exercise or sport, to try to flex our knees or bend our spines we won't be able to because our joints will have been shrink-wrapped in connective tissue.
So yoga does not only aid athletic performance, but will give you more chance of longevity in whatever it is you do. . Samuel teaches Hot Vinyasa flow on Saturdays at 9am-10am and the yoga portion of the popular Triple Threat class from 9.15am. . The Hybrid Way | #hybridfitness
