Time. That's the secret of a good ragú - take your time. Once the sauce is bubbling down the longer the tomatoes stay in the sweeter they get. Add wine. A few weeks ago while I was driving back from seeing a possible new property I stopped on the road between Volterra and Casole and took this photo. I love the fact that even in February we get such stunning light and views!

Even in the peak of summer, central Italy is filled with mysterious corners where the only other soul you're likely to meet is a free-range donkey.
Italy has thousands of these wonderfully beautiful and blissfully quiet 'ghost villages', where you can meander down picturesque lanes and clamber onto the walls of crumbling castles - and many of them are in Umbria, Lazio and Tuscany.

We stayed in Villa da Vinci and loved it! Three generations of our family vacationed together, and it was a perfect destination. The Villa is large, airy and spacious. The setting is stunning, up on a hill among olive groves, with a beautiful view of Vinci in the distance. The gardens are extensive and provide ample places to rest, dine, and relax and enjoy the view. The pool is amazing, the kids swam in it every day for hours. It's not heated, but in the summer heat that wasn't an issue. The town is walking distance, easily accessible for younger generations, especially since it is all downhill on the way there (the walk back is rather steep, but manageable). On site the caretakers were highly responsive and very helpful. Sonia in particular went out of her way to accommodate us. The company was also responsive and helpful on so many fronts (a special thank you to Lyn!). Overall, I would highly recommend the Villa and the company!

We stayed in Ponte Romano in Fivizzano. We had a great time there, the house was perfect for us and the pool...oh my, we couldn't get the children on any trips for the first few days because they wouldn't leave it. Booking and also support at the location were very well organised and all contact - per mail or personally (thank you so much Elly and Greg!) was pleasant and friendly. We'll certainly look into booking with you again next time we want to come to Tuscany!

User

We stayed at La Treggiaia at the beginning of June to celebrate my Mum's 60th birthday. We couldn't recommend it enough - the villa was the ideal base for a relaxing holiday exploring Tuscany.

The location is beautiful, overlooking the valley from the side terrace and surrounded by the grounds of the owners' farmhouse. The barn conversion has been done very tastefully and is spotlessly clean, the photos don't do it justice!

The owners were so welcoming, bringing over homemade bruschetta and answering any questions we had. We would definitely stay there again.

We stayed at Casa dei Fichi in Tuscany recently. The house was fabulous with everything we could possibly need. The atmosphere in the house was warm, welcoming and homely. The views from the house and the pool were fantastic - all the way tothe sea. The house is near the town of Campiglia marittima, which is a beautiful old hillside town, with an interesting caste and good array of shops. While we were there we ate at 57021 and I can recommend it, the food was very good.

We have just returned from a week in Casa Guielfi in Ameglia. This perfect little villa is charm itself. So pretty with the

most incredible view over beautiful countryside and the ancient hillside village of Ameglia. The little villa iitself is extremely comfortable with everything you could possibly need. The welcome pack included wine, pasta, two jars of the owners special passata and beef tomatoes. There was a welcome bottle of water. Luckily we had our own little milk pots as there wasn't any milk. The outside area is where you want to be though with numerous places to sit depending on whether you want sun or shade. The swimming pool is perfect for cooling off. There were 4 sun beds and two sets of tables and chairs. If we could suggest anything it would be some cushions for the outdoor furniture. The bedroom is bright and sunny with a very comfortable bed and air conditioning, which was very much needed, Surrounded by beautiful countryside the hardest thing is actually leaving the villa to explore. There is a walk up to the ancient village behind the villa through the woods but then an incredibly long range of winding steps - not for anyone who isn't pretty fit and mobile especially not in July heat - i did survive but only just! At the top though there is a lovely little cafe where the locals congregate. The village is so picturesque and very interesting to walk round and take lots of photos.

Bocc di Magra is a very short drive. It's a very quiet quite exclusive sort of place - lots of very posh yaughts in the marina. There are a few restaurants- Ciccio the owners restaurant looked beautiful but a bit out of our price range - seemed very popular though. The bar next to it with outside tables and still part of the restaurant was lovely for evening drinks overlooking the mountains and the estuary. We did eat at Mario's other restaurant at The Garden Hitel. Amazing pizza and pasta and good prices too. Beautiful view of the mountains.

We visited the vineyard near Sarzena which was well worth a visit. Very friendly helpful staff and very cheap wine! The town of Sarzena is well worth a visit with its typical old Italian town area and pizza with lots of churches to look at and lovely cafes and Gelaterias. There was a massive market on the Thursday went and filled the long marrow streets. We felt we were seeing the real Italy.

The old village of Monemarcello is well worth it and not far to go in the car. We had the most incredible lasagne in the piazza in the middle of the ancient town.

We also went to Lerici but it was very busy and much more than the fishing village we were expecting, all depends what you want. We weren't keen on the crowded very regimented beaches. Lots of places to eat though. We preferred Telero for an interesting place to walk round. Stunning coastal buildings built on the cliff side. No beach but very quirky place.

We would highly recommend this villa for a quiet retreat in the most stunning scenery. It is certainly a windy road to get to it but the directions are excellent and we had no trouble finding it. This area of Italy is very rural and off the tourist track, which made it really special.

The villa at Molino Alla Torrente was seriously understated in its advertising: this villa is set in a spectacular setting, it's luxurious, spacious and beautifully maintained...we wanted for nothing, including a welcome meal on our first night supplied by Kerrys Kitchens. I am in no doubt at all we will be revisiting this villa again.

Stayed at Pinolo in Casole d'Elsa - good sized apartment for 4 people, very clean and tidy and everything one would need for a holiday. Pool was a nice size with plenty of loungers/ seats around - and my favourite, a hammock hanging between 2 olive trees!

5 mins walk to nearest pizza house (which did pastries for breakfast too) and the local produce stocked supermarket and about a 15 mins walk to the town - which is beautiful with a good handful of restaurants and bars.

Invitation to Tuscany - Very helpful in terms of booking and finding us something that would suit us and our small-ish children. Would highly recommend

Casa Guelfi in Ameglia, Liguria, Italy was in a superb position, outside the village, on a hill and had spectacular views of the ancient village of Ameglia, perched on the hill opposite. Mario the owner was brilliant - friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We could pick any vegetables or fruit from the land surrounding the house, for our meals and we did! Such a lovely place, with a choice of places to sit around the house and pool. Mario would take fresh vegetables from the same land for his restaurants and hotel, in Bocca di Magra. On leaving, we were presented with two jars of homemade passata and a bottle of mint liqueur.

We went several times to Bocca di Magra, on the river estuary and enjoyed delicious fish lunches. One day, we braved the heat and went for the day to Lucca, especially to visit the Puccini Museum. Highly recommend Casa Guelfi, but be prepared for negotiating narrow lanes - large 4 by 4s not required!
