Washi (和紙) literally means 'Japanese paper'. 和 (wa/Japan) + 紙 (shi/paper) = washi Echizen in Fukui Prefecture is the largest ‘washi’ making area with a 1,500-year old history. As part of our celebration of paper during the SUBTLE exhibition, The Shop at Japan House London has a display of Echizen ‘washi’ by Sugihara Shoten, a ‘washi’ wholesalers established in 1871 by SUGIHARA Hanjirō. Included are ‘washi’ works by ‘Living National Treasure’ Iwano Ichibei IX. Read the story to find out more about the history of ‘washi’ in Japan and the many ways it is used. http://bit.ly/2Sy4u0t

Ten Japanese rituals featuring Raiho-shin — meaning visiting deity — have been added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The rituals stem from folk beliefs that gods visit their communities to usher in the New Year or new seasons with good luck. During the rituals, people dressed as deities in costumes and masks visit peoples’ homes. Pictured: Namahage in Akita Prefecture. Find out more on the UNESCO website https://tinyurl.com/y7y8x7u6

*LUNCHTIME AND EVENING 'KOTO' CONCERT FOLLOWED BY DRINKS RECEPTION*
Wednesday 5 December 2018 Lunchtime Concert: 13:15-13:45 Evening Concert: 18:30-19:30 (FULLY BOOKED), followed by a drinks reception
... This winter, enjoy a seasonal 'koto' concert by acclaimed 'koto' performer ENOKIDO Fuyuki at Japan House London.
One of the most recognisable and evocative sounds of Japan, the 'koto' is a Japanese stringed instrument made from paulownia wood with a rich musical history. First introduced in Japan in the 7th Century CE, originating from the Chinese zheng, the 'koto' became a popular instrument in aristocratic circles and a mainstay of Japanese court life. Over the years, styles of 'koto' playing have evolved, with performers today playing both classical and contemporary pieces. The 'koto' typically has 13 strings tied over 13 moveable bridges which are plucked using three finger picks. The evening performance will include a discussion session with Ms Enokido chaired by Dr David Hughes, Research Associate of the Department of Music and the Japan Research Centre at SOAS, University of London.
The event is free; booking is essential. For more info and to book your place, visit > http://bit.ly/2AtGhkB
About the performer: Enokido Fuyuki
Born in Tokyo, Japan, Enokido Fuyuki began to play the 'koto' at the age of three. She studied Musicology at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and graduated in 2000. She has performed in official events in more than 30 countries, received several awards, and also composes her own pieces.
