About Kensington Palace

The elegant home to generations of stylish royal women: where Queen Victoria was born and raised; Queens Mary, Anne and Caroline held court; and the royal style-icons Princess Margaret and Diana, Princess of Wales lived in the 20th century.

Kensington Palace Description

The feminine influence of generations of royal women has shaped this stylish palace and elegant gardens. The birthplace and childhood home of Queen Victoria, the palace first became a royal residence for William and Mary in 1689. Mary felt ‘shut in’ at Whitehall and much preferred her new Kensington home, which was enlarged by Sir Christopher Wren. The famous Orangery, was built in 1704 by Queen Anne, and George II’s wife, Queen Caroline, another keen gardener,
added further improvements. Today, the palace houses a stunning permanent display of fashionable and formal dresses, the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection, which includes Queen Victoria’s wedding dress and dresses worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

George IV was born on 12 August 1762. He was christened at St James’s Palace in September 1762 by the Archbishop of Canterbury. This christening robe of ivory silk satin was made for the young royal. A label stitched into the garment has the words 'George IV christening robe' written by hand.

Courtier, political writer and poet, Lord John Hervey died on this day in 1743.
Hervey was a close friend of Queen Caroline and a rival of Alexander Pope. Although married with eight children, throughout his life he had romantic affairs with several other court members from both genders. Lady Mary Wortley Montagu once wrote, “Humankind is divided into three sexes: men, women and Herveys” Read on about Hervey in our LGBT royal histories: http://bit.ly/LGBTpalaces

Born in Rotterdam in 1648, Grinling Gibbons was one of the most renowned wood carvers in Britain. He was commissioned by Charles II for work at Windsor Castle, and was made Master Carver in 1693 by William and Mary for whom he created extensive intricate works for Kensington Palace and Hampton Court Palace. Gibbons died on 3 August 1721. His carvings remain the most impressive sculptural work at the palaces, such as this mirror surround in the Queen’s Gallery at Kensington.

What a beautiful place and a great part of history. I loved the dedication to Diana. She was such a beautiful person inside and out, London should be proud. The U.S loved her dearly

The staff were very friendly and helpful .. the Cafe was over expensive....but have to say the coffee and walnut cake was lush....although at £3•95 a slice it needed to be... Ha ha

A lovely page and place that provides a window into royal life.

Visited yesterday and was greeted by friendly and informative staff. I enjoyed the short talk from the Explainer :)

The Diana exhibit was lovely. I enjoyed the way the the dress was juxtaposed with a picture of Dina wearing the dress as well as a description of what the event was. One critique of my palace visit. The coffee shop was too crowded. It was impossible to even wait to get a cup of tea or a biscuit as there were people everywhere. The gift shop is just too small.

We loved Kensington though. I wish there was a tour that described the grounds as well as the interior rooms. We wandered around forever looking for the Diana memorial fountain.

User

What was there was good, but it only took me less than an hour to walk round (including gardens) at a leisurely pace and was overpriced.

User

Well... the fashion exhibition is lovely indeed, but there are only a few dresses, and what was most disappointing: the dress which is featured in the poster advertising the exhibition is not on display. All in all - going there was nice but bearing in mind the fee which is charged, I would not recommend it.

User

Not as big as I thought. Needs doing up in places. the people's princess exhibition was ok there was not a lot, but there was amazing dress what was on display. Staff was very friendly.
