Club trip to Inverlael 21st July 2018. Accommodation for the weekend was Forest Way Bunkhouse - thanks to Iain Kaye for his warm welcome to this great wee bunkhouse in a perfect location. The meet was attended by Mike Campbell, Sharon McKeown, Netta Ross, Claire Mathews and Jack Seyfried. Jack's targets for the weekend were various Graham's scattered throughout the area - I'm sure his colourful posts will follow this very shortly. The remainder of the group had the Dearg's i...n their sights. This is the group of 4 Munros - Eididh nan Clach Geala, Meall nan Ceapraichean, Cona Mheall and Beinn Dearg. We set off from the walker's car park at Inverlael early in the morning and hiked into Gleann na Sguaib, aiming for the first target of the day, Eididh nan Clach Geala. As we gained height it was clear that the early morning clag was going to take some time to lift, although it remained warm for most of the day. The summit was gained still in the clag, which meant we had to navigate to find the small group of lochans below Ceann Garbh. Once back down out of the mist however, the views opened up and we were treated to tremendous panoramas. The next summit, Meall nan Ceapraichean was attained relatively effortlessly in clear weather. Unfortunately, as we were preparing for our summit photos, we were enveloped in the clag once again. Yet again we were forced to navigate off the hill. Now down at the bealach below Beinn Dearg, we stopped for lunch and enjoyed the clear air once more. The ascent up Cona Mheall was gratefully accomplished in clear weather and we were rewarded by glorious views all around - particularly towards Seana Braigh and the Assynt hills. This wasn't to last though, as the ascent up Beinn dearg following the stane dyke soon pulled us back into the clag. Once again we had to navigate off the summit, aiming for the ridge section of the dyke to provide us with an easy line to follow off the hill. The clag made things rather disorientating, to the point where our senses were beginning to deceive us but, trusting our navigation, we eventually found the dyke to much relief all round! We had decided to make our way back to the bunkhouse via the Munro top of Lorguill and follow the path beneath Beinn Enaiglair back down to the plantation just above the bunkhouse and pick up the car later. Although on paper this appeared to be a shorter return, this took us over some rough ground which slowed us down significantly. With hindsight we would have been better to follow the dyke all the way back down to the car park. Still, a great day out was had by all and it made for an awesome adventure. Well done everyone and I hope it's given you an appettite for more epic days out on the hills!
