"Why's there a helicopter above my house?"
We'd thought we'd pitch in and answer this age old question that we get asked a LOT. It can be a soar point but the answer is simple. The crew are looking for someone or something somewhere. (Hope that helps).
But looking up, the helicopter teams of the National Police Air Service that cover our fine borough are NPAS Redhill, NPAS Benson and NPAS London do try to be as quiet as possible. Although "hopes and prayers" are a lot quie...ter, an engine and rotor is much more reliable.
Having had the opportunity to fly in one, we learnt that although the helicopter maybe above your area, they may actually be looking at something much farther away. (Sorry if they flightened you though!) They work a 24 hour rotor making them a highly valuable resource for the teams below.
Getting into a career in aviation is difficult as you need the right altitude and dedication as you may get hungry as the teams often miss having their launch.
We'll continue to keep you as informed as possible when the teams "get to the choppa" but follow your NPAS teams on Twitter and Facebook for direct info!

Man jailed for throwing a corrosive substance at teenager in Kingston
A man has been jailed for throwing a corrosive substance at a teenager in Kingston.
Donell Wilkins, 18, (18.4.00) of Kingston was sentenced to six years yesterday at Kingston Crown Court after being found guilty of throwing upon another person a corrosive substance with intent to burn, maim, disfigure, disable or commit GBH contrary to Section 29 of the Offences against the Person Act.
... The offence was committed in #FifeRoad, #Kingston at around 18:40hrs on 21 July 2017.
Wilkins was one of a group of teenagers who became involved in a dispute with two other males. Without warning, Wilkins sprayed the corrosive substance at one of the males, before walking away from the scene.
The victim - a 17-year-old male - went to hospital, where he was treated for burns to his face and eye before being discharged. The exact type of corrosive substance was not identified.
An investigation was launched by detectives in Kingston. Officers recognised Wilkins from CCTV footage of the incident, which led to his arrest.
He was charged on 7 October and bailed to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court on 8 November 2017.
The trial started at Kingston Crown Court on Monday, 18 June. He was found guilty on Friday, 22 June.

#BurglarsBounty - A Necklace fit for a Queen
The SouthWestBCU Media team have recently begun working with officers from the serious organised crime unit to help identify the owners of over 600 items of property. Items range from Jewellery, watches, designer bags and designer clothes that they believe were stolen in a series of burglaries before the 8th February 2018.
So far, victims of these burglaries have been found in north London through to Surrey. However, there are st...ill several hundreds of items that need reuniting with their owners, and we need your help….
In a new initiative we are launching this week, we will release a photograph of a unique or valuable item that needs reuniting with their owner. The more owners we find, the more victims we identify, the more charges we can bring to the suspects.
To kick things off, we are looking for the owner of the necklace pictured below.
Here’s its story.
When we first came across this intriguing necklace, we were at a loss as to what the symbols meant or indeed, what language it is written in. Out came the deerstalker hat and magnifying glass and after some investigation, a colleague suggested that it looked like it was written in Hebrew, possibly someone’s name…
Low and behold they were only right!
Thanks to Rabbi Schindler at the Richmond Synagogue, we now know that this necklace is likely to belong to a female as it reads "Malka", meaning “Queen”. Although this may be the Hebrew name of the owner, they could go by a different name in daily life. So please get liking / sharing / commenting and help us reunite this necklace with its Queen.
To see the full range of items we are trying to find owners for, please view the photographs on the Metropolitan Police Flickr Page at https://www.flickr.com/photos/metropolita npolice/albums
If you think that this necklace or any of the items on the flickr page belong to you, then please send us a message on here or email DC Louise Holman at louise.holman2@met.pnn.police.uk and quote the exhibit number. The exhibit number for this necklace is JP/24AT.
