About Limehouse Town Hall

Housed in a grade II listed building, Limehouse Town Hall acts as a hub for creative and cultural activities.

Limehouse Town Hall Description

Limehouse Town Hall is a place where working artists and cultural producers, audiences and communities are supported to share ideas, try out new things, and imagine a better here and now.

Housed in a grade II listed building, Limehouse Town Hall acts as a hub for creative and cultural activities. As one of the last remaining versatile and multi-purpose cultural spaces in the city, the town hall makes interesting things happen.

The Town Hall is an active, vibrant and supportive place that makes space for ideas and activities to develop at their own pace. Combining forces under the umbrella of Limehouse Town Hall Trust, its creative residents, past and present, make significant contributions to the cultural life and well being of the east end of London and beyond.

Limehouse Town Hall is a valuable civic resource underpinned by a belief that arts and culture can create progressive changes in individual lives and society.

The Council's Development Committee meeting to take a decision on the proposed major housing development across the street at 767-787 Commercial Road will take place next Thursday 24th January 2019 at 6.30pm.
Please join us to say NO to this development by being at the meeting.
While it will fix up the building across the road, which is good, the housing and facilities in this proposed development are:... •Expensive. •For single young people who come to stay temporarily in the area. •For the benefit of a closed private community who can afford to pay for it.
Because it is a purpose-built HMO and it's not classed the development does not have to have: •Any 'affordable' housing provision •Any community infrastructure levy
The long-term effect of this proposed development may include: •Increase in housing and commercial rents for others living in the area. •Increase pressure to redevelop Locksley Estate, making it more expensive to live there and decreasing the amount of social housing on the estate. •Push people who already live in the area out.

LOCAL PLANNING UPDATE - On Thursday a council planning committee will meet to review the Sailmakers site planning application.
Local councillors have jointly signed a letter requesting that this decision be deferred as the application fails to meet criteria for affordable housing, along with other concerns.

We've been busy creating a garden space at the Town Hall. Any suggestions for things to grow? Thank you so much to all those who volunteered and to Groundwork London for making the project possible

A solidarity letter for Macao from Limehouse Town Hall, London.
Limehouse Town Hall is an independent cultural centre in East London committed to mutual aid and ethical models for the cultural industries – models that bring arts, activism and alternative grassroots forms of civic participation together. We are writing to express our dismay about the situation of eviction facing Macao and to express our solidarity with the organisation.
We were lucky enough to visit Macao th...is summer and to have them as guests in London. They are one of the few organisations experimenting with governance and economic models that seek to imagine and practice the future. The future that Macao seeks to make real is one characterised by co-operation rather than competition. Macao eschews the valorisation of cultural work as exceptional, challenging its models of (self)-exploitation, unpaid labour and participation. It is one of the few organisations whose ongoing functioning is characterised by an inclusive participatory democratic practice that embraces difficulty, solidarity, and on-going experimentation.
Now is the time for cultural institutions committed to practicing mutual aid, redistributive justice and common benefit. Macao’s ground-breaking work with basic income and common currency are extraordinary. Macao’s experimentation and rigour consistently place critical questions of labour, care and sustainability at the heart of its practice. The sale of this public asset by the Municipality of Milan, of Macao’s public house, to one of the largest international banking groups is a grave mistake that could and should be reversed.
Macao is a vital space that offers us at Limehouse Town Hall inspiration for challenging, negotiating and reflecting on expectations and privileges of participation in the cultural sector and in life in the city. We urge those in power to be bold and to embrace the future. Keep this public undertaking in the hands of its many members. #supportmacao
