About Livability

Livability is the disability charity that connects people with their communities.

Livability Description

Livability is the disability charity that connects people with their communities.

We tackle social isolation and the barriers that can cause this in the lives of disabled and vulnerable people.

Through a wide range of disability, education, training and community services, we promote inclusion and wellbeing for all.

Together, we work to see people take part, contribute and be valued.

We put the elements in place that all add up to connected lives and communities.

‘To be with Ness makes me so happy and calm,’ says Stevie. ‘I love him to bits,’ says Ness. This couple, who have been together since 2007, first met on New Year’s Eve at a holiday home for disabled people. They are separated by many miles - Ness lives at Livability York House in West Yorkshire and Stevie is in Cambridge. Our disability services put individuals’ wellbeing and happiness as top priority, so for York House staff, making sure Ness and Stevie can meet up is essential. Long-distance relationships can be challenging for any couple. Add in the barriers that disabled people can face, with transport, health and finance, and keeping a relationship alive can be a challenge. read Ness and Stevie's story and find out what you could do to support our services to enable people to live life to the full www.livability.org.uk/valentines

Is buying a Valentine’s card or two on your to-do list this week?
Gavin was way ahead of the Valentine’s game when he started work on a special gift for his girlfriend, weeks before February 14th. Gavin is an experienced metalworker, having learned his craft at Livability's social enterprise Maesbury Metals. When Valentine's Day loomed on the horizon, Gavin knew he wanted to make his girlfriend something unique - and romantic. Disability can be a barrier to developing your spiritual life. Travelling to a place of worship can make it challenging to join with others. We strive to break down barriers, so at Livability Keefield Close, a residential care home for disabled adults, the local church comes to them, in the form of vicar Barbara! #breakingdownbarriers #italladdsup

In the lead up to valentine’s day we’ve been on the lookout for tales of real-life love from people we support. Over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing heartwarming stories of friendship, connection and care – like Peter and Debbie here.
They both live with profound disabilities, including little verbal communication, and are wheelchair users. The couple live at Livability Brookside House, with flats right opposite each other, which they say suits them perfectly. Their relat...ionship bloomed and when they decided to get married, Livability staff helped them with every detail of the day!
Help Livability to break-down barriers this Valentine’s Day, to support disabled people like Pete and Debbie to live a life that they want to lead. https://livability.org.uk/landing/valenti nes/

‘As well as the physical therapy from the team there, Icanho encouraged me to see how much I could still do and let me talk about how I was feeling. Getting your mind right is really important.’ Read about how the breadth of therapies Livability Icnaho made a big difference to Bob: https://livability.org.uk/from-stroke-to- success-giving-ba…/

Bob Power was supported by Livability Icanho, our brain injury rehabilitation centre in Suffolk, following a debilitating stroke. Last week, he presented a £1,000 cheque for his gratitude to Livability Icanho. The money was raised by Bob’s fitness company, Next Level Fitness, which he founded after receiving the life-changing treatment which enabled him to regain his mobility and return to working life.
Thanks Bob!

Feeling #BlueMonday ... check out our live BirdCam!
January can be a gloomy time of year for many of us with the combination of post-Christmas blues, long dark nights and cold weather. Connecting with nature is a great way to improve and sustain a sense of wellbeing. The Livability Holton Lee site is alive with wildlife and dedicated to improving people's wellbeing with our flourish programme. But if you can't get out into nature right now or want a little pick-me-up from yo...ur desk, this livestream from one of the bird-feeders on site could be just the tonic you need. See what you can spot in a five-minute break… it's surprisingly theraputic! http://ow.ly/xngW50xXVPR

We are committed to breaking down barriers for disabled people. That's why we devote time to training and assisting the people we support with alternative communications aids, to give them the opportunity to live fulfilling lives.
Read about how assistive technology has helped Tim and Rachel, at Livability Treetops in Essex, to communicate and feel less isolated, enabling them to use social media or their smart phone to stay in touch with family and friends. #breakingbarriers

Are you feeling motivated in the new year? Take a read of Zara's inspiring story of how she went from being unable to stand unaided, to walking more than 1,000 miles from John O’ Groats to Land’s End!
Zara sustained a brain injury in 2016, leaving her paralysed down one side. She received expert treatment at Livability Icanho, our specialist brain injury rehabilitation centre which gave her the support to achieve this challenge.

Livability gives three cheers for accessible panto at theatres around the country! This Christmas time 30 disabled people who are supported by Livability, some with sensory needs, are off to a special performance of Aladdin. Low lighting levels and freedom to move around during the performance at Colwyn Bay Theatre means everyone can enjoy the show. #Enjoytheshow

At Livability, we support disabled people who want to get involved in their community at Christmas. Paul, who lives at a Livability residential home, recently finished his first volunteer shift at the local fire station’s café. He kept things merry and bright by clearing, washing up and restocking goodies. ‘It’s a good, good place,’ says Paul, who’ll be back in the cafe in 2020 as the station’s first volunteer. #merrychristmas
