As some of you may have already heard, we will soon be moving premises. We will be moving to Phoenix Rose Garden Centre, which is on the same road we are on now but further down the hill.

We have successfully bred .quite a few species of freshwater fish in the shop recently, but this will be the first marine fish. We have Banggai cardinalfish fry!

As we finally seem to past the worst of the cold weather, and spring is on its way. We have our first delivery of pond plants to brighten up your pond after the winter.

This weeks plant of the week is Striped gardener's garters Phalaris arundinacea 'Picta'.
Phalaris arundinacea 'Picta' is a fast growing grass that will grow almost anywhere. This makes it an ideal candidate for planting in shady areas around the pond where other plants might struggle. It has attractive cream/white and dark green variegated leaves that sometimes have hint of pink. In the summer it puts out spikes of delicate pink flowers.

This week plant of the week is Cyperus alternifolius Umbrella plant The umbrella plant is a clump forming grass-like perennial, that is ideal for smaller and container ponds. It is slower to spread than many of the alternative grass like plants and will not survive winter unprotected, this makes it ideal for when you don’t want one plant taking over. It has grass like foliage that forms characteristic star shaped “umbrellas” at the top of each stem. It can be treated as annual or as a perennial if given protection or brought inside over winter.

This weeks plant of the week is Preslia cervina (Mentha cervina) Water spearmint Water spearmint is a sprawling aromatic herb that grows well on the margins of a pond, or in any wet ground. Its foliage has the distinctive minty fragrance. It flowers in mid to late summer with whorls of powdery blue to purple flowers. These flowers are great for pollinating insects like bees and butterflies.
